The Basics

Arrive on a guided tour from Amsterdam—by boat, bike, or coach—and explore the maze-like streets with a local guide or delve into the town’s history at the Volendam Museum, which houses paintings, sculptures, and pottery. Many day trips include stops at the nearby Zaanse Schans windmills, Marken, and Edam. You can also learn about the evolution of Dutch cheese-making at the Cheese Factory and Museum or visit a clog maker to try on traditional Dutch costumes.

Fantastic
It was a amazing experience thanks to Raquel and Jack. Each stop offered a wonderful and different adventure. If you like cheese, this is definitely the tour to choose, as you would get to sample a variety of cheeses and as well as see how clogs (wooden Dutch shoes) are made.

Zaanse Schans Windmills and Volendam Small-Group Tour from Amsterdam
Tol was an excellent tour guide. Very knowledgeable. Fun tour. The windmills were very interesting. Each one has different purpose. The eco system is extremely important to Amsterdam. Visited a fisherman’s village too!

Volendam, Edam and Windmills Guided Day Tour
It’s was a nice trip. Maybe a little long because of too much time on your own. Because of that the trip took 1 hour more than the expected 5,5 hour.

Bike rental Volendam - Explore the Countryside of Amsterdam
When we came to pick up the bike, our order was not registered in the system. But, the staff did a quick check in their email and found the order. After that, we got a brief explanation about the route we can take etc. He suggested the suitable bikes for the whole family. The rest was just a lovely biking ride trip in the area. Definitely a recommended service.

We LOVED this Tour. Raquel and Jack were exceptional guides, and quite entertaining. We were fortunate to have excellent weather, and each stop was unique and showed a different side of the culture, architecture and customs. We would take this tour again if we come back, it was wonderful!

This was a really enjoyable and chilled trip. There was only three of us on the tour and it was really well paced. There was a good mixture of guided time and free time. The guide was excellent and certainly knew his stuff.

When to Get There

Though there's plenty to do year-round in Volendam, much of the village’s charm lies in its outdoor attractions; as such, late spring and summer are the best times to visit. Volendammer Weekend in June is especially festive, with traditional crafts and eel-smoking demonstrations, people in authentic Dutch dress, sailing competitions, and more.

Things to Do Near Volendam

The historic cheese-making town of Edam is set just a few minutes inland of Volendam, and the working windmill village of Zaanse Schans is also nearby. Across the bay lies the fishing village of Marken, which can be reached by a 45-minute ferry ride. You can visit the Alkmaar cheese market from April through September. If visiting Volendam in spring, consider going to Keukenhof Gardens to see the millions of flowering seasonal bulbs.
