Yoho National Park

Yoho National Park, Field, Canada, BC V0A 1G0

The Basics

Yoho National Park, on the western slopes of the Canadian Rockies in British Columbia, is the quiet neighbor of more popular Jasper and Banff national parks (home of tourist hot spots Banff and Lake Louise) in Alberta. Founded in 1886, Yoho is also the 2nd-oldest national park in the Parks Canada system. Must-sees include Lake O’Hara, Emerald Lake, Wapta Falls, Takakkaw Falls, and the natural bridge and the Kicking Horse River that flows beneath it.

While you can explore Yoho on your own, adventure is made easy with white-water rafting tours, stand-up paddleboard trips that call on Wapta Falls, and group excursions by minibus to Yoho’s waterfalls.

Wonderful tour.
Wonderful day even though the weather wasn’t the best. Saw spectacular waterfalls and was able to do a couple of hikes. Tia, our tour guide, was great. She was very accommodating and informative. Made sure we were all having a good time.

Beautiful tour, pleasant guide, annoying other tourists

3-Day Rockies Classic Tour (Yoho & Jasper National Park)
Great things to see and do on the tour, our tour guide was very nice The hotels were decent and things ran on time Our tour group (not Viator's fault) of other customers were not the greatest. Some were rude and others constantly pushed their way to the front of the line as if the rest of us did not exist. Others showed up late and then cut the line. In the future maybe some guidelines should be given for the guests.

Rocky Mountains Columbia Icefields, Banff & Yoho National Park 3-Day Tour
This was pretty good purchase. The lodging was great in both locations and the tour guides were nice and fun. I only had 1 issue. The day of the Icefields I could not go on the tour because although it says you can book extra attractions through your tour guides bthere's not really a time to do this. They never asked me when they picked me up if I wanted to add any excursions to the trip and the itinerary tells you the lenght of activities but no actual time of where you will be to even plan such things. Instead the day of while in route they just announced that some of us never booked anything so we had to stay at welcome center. Multiple people had this issue and were quite upset since it's about a 4 hour trip to get there just to not be able to go. So while everyone was gone I booked my own activities for the next day. Thankful that activity didn't have any set time to use the ticket. I would suggest either a more detailed schedule to let people know when they will be at certain places so they can plan ahead or send a text out after booking asking if there are any we want to add. Or start including the actual bus ride of the Icefields in the price. Just some better communication prior to the day of when it's too late to book anything.

Must do hike in winter!

Yoho National Park Waterfalls & Lakes | Small Group Active Full Day Adventure
My adult daughter and I did the Half Day Johnston Canyon Tour on January 29, 2022. It was an amazing activity to do in winter. I have two things to say. (1) Travel to Banff in the winter even if you don't ski. There's so much to do and it’s gorgeous, and (2) you must go to Johnston Canyon in winter and skip the hiking guide. Our driving guide, Dale, was fantastic. His business clearly intends to help people enjoy the outdoors without selling something you don’t need. Dale gave us crampons and hiking poles and waited in his heated van in case we wanted to come back early. The canyon hike is so easy to follow--a guided tour would be annoying. Instead we went at our own pace stopping to take pictures as we saw fit. Dale was right there to pick us up at the trail head and bring us back to town. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and fun. I would do any tour his company offers in the future.

When to Get There

The park is open year-round, though snow limits accessibility for most of the year (generally October until June), and many visitor services are closed in the winter. In summer, weekends are busier with traffic than weekdays, but Yoho is rarely crowded.

Hike to Fossil Beds in the Burgess Shale

For true adventurers, a hike into the fossil beds of the Burgess Shale is an experience not to be missed. Guides from Parks Canada or the Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation lead these strenuous, day-trip hikes (self-guided hikes are not permitted). Choose from a hike to the Walcott Quarry or Mount Stephen. Both require reservations and a high degree of preparedness.
