Mediterranean Seafront to Ronda de Sant Pere, Ciutat Vella, Barcelona, Catalonia

The Basics

Few come to Barcelona without spending time in the Gothic Quarter. Situated between El Born and El Raval, the neighborhood is home to the Barcelona Cathedral, Plaça Sant Jaume, Plaça Reial, and the city's most intact stretch of Roman wall. Its winding streets make it an easy and pleasant place to get lost for an afternoon, but seeing it with a guide will unlock the area's historic and cultural significance. Most walking, cycling, and Segway tours spend time in the Gothic Quarter.

Kids and Family Gothic Quarter Barcelona Walking Tour
Our tour guide was Ali and she was incredible. This tour was engaging for the kids and interesting for the adults. Ali did a beautiful job of not only interacting with the kids, but also helping them become fast buddies in the process. As our vacation around Barcelona continued, our son found many opportunities to recall something Ali had said or done during the guided tour. I couldn't recommend this experience more!

Early Picasso Museum & Gothic Quarter Tour
Guide made this side trip excellent. Very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. Gave him $10 euro tip. That says it all. Embarrassed his name escapes me. Jet lag and all. Could have skipped the breakfast but guide joined us with coffee and provided good info and directions around Barcelona.

Private Barcelona Old Town and Gothic Quarter Walking Tour
That visit helped bring life to the numerous gothic and historic cathedral and buildings. Our guide was Donnatella replaced a sick guide at the last minute and was very knowledgeable. The private tour makes the visit very personal, allowing you to go at your own rhythm and ask all the questions you want. We strongly recomment this visit!

Barcelona Walking Tour: Flamenco Show, Tapas Dinner & Gothic Quarter
Joseph from "We Are Guides Barcelona" made us feel welcome and his enthusiasm made our tour the best day of our entire European vacation. The local restaurant we visited was delicious and the authentic flamenco show was excellent. I wish I could experience the evening all over again! Thank you Joseph.

Atmospheric Sunrise in the Gothic Quarter: history and Instagram photo tour
Absolutely I amazing tour. Location was easy to find and Olga our tour guide was very informative. The locations and information she provided on the Gothic Quarter were very descriptive and made you feel like you were part of the city. In addition to all of the great locations she was extremely well versed in photographic. Her inside knowledge of locations and best times to create a magical photo were top notch. Olga was familiar with the shadows, angels and lighting for any type of photo. During the tour we stopped in front of the Jewish Museum and I received more information from her than I did going in later and actually taking the tour. Olga was kind and personable with a great knowledge of photography. The pictures included were taken by her.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Many travelers opt to get oriented with a guided tour before wandering the Gothic Quarter on your own.

  • This neighborhood is a must-see for first-time visitors.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes. The Gothic Quarter is expansive and the pavement not always even.

  • Some of the shops and restaurants in the neighborhood close on Sundays.

How to Get to the Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter sits in the middle of Barcelona's Old Town, with La Rambla to one side and Via Laietana to the other. The quarter itself is easy to navigate on foot, as most streets are closed to traffic, and it's accessible from other areas of the city via the metro (Liceu, Jaume I, or Plaça Catalunya stations).

When to Get There

The narrow streets can get packed with people in July and August, peak tourist season in Barcelona. Late summer is also the hottest time of year, with temperatures rising into the high 80s and low 90s F. In spring and fall, cool temperatures and sparser crowds make for pleasant exploration, while visitors who come during the holiday season can see the neighborhood lit up in colorful lights or shop at the Christmas market in front of the Barcelona Cathedral.

The Gothic Quarter and the Spanish Civil War

This neighborhood witnessed some of the most significant moments of the Spanish Civil War in Barcelona. In the now serene Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, shrapnel-scarred walls testify to the bombs dropped in January 1938. The Hotel Continental, situated along La Rambla, was where George Orwell and his wife stayed during the war; he mentions it in his book "Homage to Catalonia."
