Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic)

Mediterranean Seafront to Ronda de Sant Pere, Ciutat Vella, Barcelona, Catalonia

The Basics

Few come to Barcelona without spending time in the Gothic Quarter. Situated between El Born and El Raval, the neighborhood is home to the Barcelona Cathedral, Plaça Sant Jaume, Plaça Reial, and the city's most intact stretch of Roman wall. Its winding streets make it an easy and pleasant place to get lost for an afternoon, but seeing it with a guide will unlock the area's historic and cultural significance. Most walking, cycling, and Segway tours spend time in the Gothic Quarter.

Barcelona Old Town, The Gothic Quarter Private Tour with Hotel Pickup
We learned so much on this tour with Jorge from JC Tours! Hotel pick up made it easy for us. Jorge showed us important things along with historical information about the Gothic Quarter. He was enthusiastic and was able to answer our questions. We appreciate the pictures he showed us to give us a better understanding of the old city walls. Do this tour!

This was an excellent tour. Jordie (?) was an extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. We learned all sorts of new things about Barcelona that we’d forgotten, or never learned, on our last trip. Highly recommend as a short walk about in the old city.

Gothic Quarter's deepest secrets & Sangria
The guide, Juliana, was very knowledgeable and kept it moving. Found out things about Barcelona that I would never have known. The food afterwards was extremely fantastic. The even turned on the AC for us which is very highly unique to have AC in Europe especially in restaurants.

Kids and Family Gothic Quarter Barcelona Walking Tour
My husband and I and our three kids did this tour one morning in Barcelona, and our tour guide (Lisa) was amazing. She was really entertaining and engaging for the kids, and the information she shared was great and done in a way that resonated with kids and adults alike. We definitely felt like we got a secret view into some places that we never would have found on our own!

Barcelona Ghost Hunt: Haunted Gothic Quarter Exploration Game
Great tour/idea. Do not start it after 10pm, Bcn is not safe enough to wander the Gotic as you have to complete the tour. It does feel slightly overpriced for what you get compared to a walking tour but I will definitely continue using the app

How to Get to the Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter sits in the middle of Barcelona's Old Town, with La Rambla to one side and Via Laietana to the other. The quarter itself is easy to navigate on foot, as most streets are closed to traffic, and it's accessible from other areas of the city via the metro (Liceu, Jaume I, or Plaça Catalunya stations).

When to Get There

The narrow streets can get packed with people in July and August, peak tourist season in Barcelona. Late summer is also the hottest time of year, with temperatures rising into the high 80s and low 90s F. In spring and fall, cool temperatures and sparser crowds make for pleasant exploration, while visitors who come during the holiday season can see the neighborhood lit up in colorful lights or shop at the Christmas market in front of the Barcelona Cathedral.

The Gothic Quarter and the Spanish Civil War

This neighborhood witnessed some of the most significant moments of the Spanish Civil War in Barcelona. In the now serene Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, shrapnel-scarred walls testify to the bombs dropped in January 1938. The Hotel Continental, situated along La Rambla, was where George Orwell and his wife stayed during the war; he mentions it in his book "Homage to Catalonia."
