The Basics

Many travelers visit Penedès on a day trip from Barcelona. Though wine tasting is at the top of the activity menu, there are tours for all types of travelers. Cycle through picturesque vineyards on a guided bike tour of the region, take a food tour to sample local artisan olive oils and cheeses, or combine an afternoon of wine tasting with a morning visit to the nearby UNESCO World Heritage-listed Montserrat Monastery.

Rodrigo, the guide was great. The three wineries were extremely enjoyable and the guides from the wineries did a great job representing both the wines and the wineries.

A Fantastic Day!

Three Vineyard Winery Small Group tour in Penedes Region from Barcelona
The day started very well beung welcomed by Christel at the tour offices until our tour guide, Sergio arrived. What a very personable man who truly enjoys his work and getting to know his clients. We were four from Michigan and joined by a wondeful couple from Purto Rico. Sergio took us to his very comfortable van and we were off to the Perendes region. We visited three family run vineyards where we learned so much about their histories and challenges due to climate change as well as changes to regulations. The tastings were generous along with snacks, Sergio made a reservation for us for lunch at an excellent where we were lucky to be there at the time of the year when in-season calcots (char-grilled spring onions) were available. We learned how to eat them the Catalan-way—dipped in romesco sauce. We highly recommend this tour which takes you out of Barcelona about an hour’s distance. A bonus is to have Sergio as your tour guide.

Great multi-stop wine tour

Three Vineyard Winery Small Group tour in Penedes Region from Barcelona
We absolutely loved our wine tour with Rodrigo! He was very knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and funny! We got to visit 3 different wineries and tasted 3-4 generous pours of wine/cava at each stop. One of the stops had a wine/cheese board as well. After the second winery we stopped for a delicious lunch (not included in price of tour) and then went to the third winery. The drive is scenic and not too long- would 100% recommend this tour!

10/10 would do it again!

Three Vineyard Winery Small Group tour in Penedes Region from Barcelona
The six of us went on tour with Rod. Both the tour itself and Rod were great - we visited three very unique wine estates and Rod also took us to a very cool place to have lunch, where we could sit right next to the vines. Throughout the tour, Rod also talked about the history and sights of Barcelona and gave recommendations for restaurants and more. Since it was only our group of 6 visiting the tour, Rod was extremely accommodating, as he was ready to pick us up from our place of stay (not from the original pick-up place). Everyone in our company confirmed that they would rate the tour 10/10 and would do it again!

Fantastic Vineyard Tour

Three Vineyard Winery Small Group tour in Penedes Region from Barcelona
My husband and I went with our friends, another couple, to the three vineyard tour. I was just the four of us and our guide, Rodrigo. He was fantastic, charming and knowledgable. The vineyards we visited were diverse and stunning each in their own way. The first was a larger, organic vineyard in a beautiful setting. The second, a biodynamic vineyard. The third, a family -owned vineyard, was very special as we got a tour from the proprietor herself. We stopped for a great lunch in a country restaurant. Fantastic day, highly recommend.

When to Get There

One of the most exciting times to visit Penedès is during the autumn grape harvest, which happens during September and October. Fall and spring both offer cooler temperatures perfect for touring the vineyards. July and August tend to be the busiest months at popular wineries and Montserrat Monastery.

Famous Winemakers of Penedès

This wine region has hundreds of wineries to choose from, but a few are such big names that you’re likely to see their labels at your wine store back home. Among those that offer tours are Codorníu with its grand Modernista building, Freixenet (the biggest cava producer in Spain), and Torres, a 17th-century family-owned winery.
