The Basics

The Guggenheim is Bilbao’s most popular attraction, and the facade is all but impossible to miss. Those who want to tour the collection have many options to choose from. Explore the exterior and interior on a guided small-group tour, or gain insight into the collection and architecture with a private guide and customized tour. It’s also possible to visit on a day trip from San Sebastian or as part of a multi-day itinerary through northern Spain.

Excellent tour and guide
My husband and I did this tour. We signed up on line Knowing where to go was interesting so we wandered around a bit. The entrance is by the big puppy planter. Once you know that it is quite straight forward. Our guide met us there. Javier was excellent. He gave us all the details and without him we would not have gotten as much out of the museum.

Our guide was Iker Bardaji and he was tremendous through the entire day, explaining the main exhibits of the Guggenheim and its architecture and the main sights of Bilbao. He took us to the old town and to an amazing Pintxos bar where he had pre arranged a table for us.He also taught us a lot about the Basque culture. 100/100 good

Guggenheim Bilbao Museum Private Tour
Our tour guide gave us an exceptional personal tour that made great use of our hour and half. He was so well informed and educated on Bilbao and it's history. He had stories about all the artist, architects, finical backers and how they all came together. Simply amazing and so well worth the cost of the personal tour, it enriches the time you have in this unique one of kind Museum. Highly recommended.

Bilbao, Guggenheim and Gaztelugatxe Small Group Tour with lunch
Comfortable ride in vehicle with tour guide. Nice lady. Gaztelugatxe is fantastic. The hike was fun and somewhat challenging but totally worth it. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao was just ok although I am not a big museum fan and the display there was so so. The pintxos bar we ate on the tour in Bilbao was just average but then again it's difficult to compete with the pintxos bars in San Sebastian. I am glad I did not stay in Bilbao on our trip as San Sebastian is much more exciting and fun.

Construction of the Guggenheim

This distinctly Gehry-esque museum was built on a former wharf in Bilbao between 1993 and 1997 using some 33,000 thin titanium sheets, along with limestone and glass. The iconic American architect designed the museum to harmonize with its surroundings, and the color of the exterior changes based on weather and light conditions. Since the design was so mathematically complicated, Gehry relied on software designed for the aerospace industry to help translate his concept into reality.
