Trakoscan Castle

Trakošćan

The Basics

This grand Gothic fortress dates back to the 13th century, but much of its current appearance is owed to mid-19th century restorations. Owned by the Draškovi? family until 1944, the castle is now the property of the state, reopening in 1950 as a museum. Impeccably restored with period-style decor, the castle's three floors display a mix of neo-Renaissance, Gothic, and baroque designs, featuring many original furnishings and artworks amassed by the Draškovi?s over the years. Other highlights include the castle's eerie underground dungeons, a vast collection of 15th- to 19th-century weaponry, and painter Julijana Erdödy's study.

A scenic path around a tree-lined lake on the castle grounds is a popular option for walking and picnicking. The castle’s proximity to Zagreb makes it a popular day trip from the capital. Organized tours generally feature a guided overview of the castle and gardens, often combined with a visit to the nearby baroque city of Varaždin.

Baroque Varaždin and Trakošćan Castle Private Tour
We really enjoyed going out of Zagreb for a different experience. The beautiful small old town of Varazdin was picture perfect with interesting history, vintage buildings, castle, and shops. It was like something out of an 1800s story book. It was nice driving through the countryside and small towns to Trakoscan Castle which was also picture perfect in a very nice wooded setting. Our driver Karlo was the best--very friendly, flexible and full of history and other relative local information. We were very pleased we had chosen this trip.

An excellent trip in every respect. Luckily, my wife and I were the only guests and extremely well looked after by Maja. She was pleasant, knowledgeable and extremely attentive. Pickup was punctual and car was clean and comfortable. Most enjoyable day.

Varazdin Baroque Town and Trakoscan Castle - Small Group Day Trip from Zagreb
There is so much to do around Zagreb. This is one of them. See the old town Varazdin and it's castle. It is a pretty place. Then go to Trakoscan castle. What a castle too. There is so much to see and learn about in this whole tour. Luca the guide is a great guy. Very knowledgeable and personable. I highly recommend this tour if you are in Zagreb.

I was the only participant with Luka as guide. This tour was the third I had unknowingly booked from the same company - Petros - and they were all excellent! Great tours with great guides, and this one was no exception.

Varazdin Baroque Town and Trakoscan Castle - Small Group Day Trip from Zagreb
Our tour guide, Maja, was fabulous..very knowledgable and enthusiastic. Varazdin was a beautiful town and we could have had more free time there but we had to have lunch and ran out of time. Trakoscan Castle was very interesting and again Maja was very knowledgable giving us an interesting history lesson of the family who lived in the castle. . There were only 5 of us on the tour which made it very comfortable .. we would re on end this tour to other visitors!

Croatia’s Best Castles From romantic storybook palaces like Trakoš?an to imposing stone fortresses still standing from the Middle Ages, Croatia boasts castles across a range of eras and styles waiting to be explored. Nearby, the Gothic Renaissance Varaždin Castle is home to the town’s history museum with many artifacts, while Veliki Tabor castle in Zagorje is steeped in legends and surrounded by pristine forestland. All three castles could technically be visited in a full-day trip from Zagreb.
