The Basics

Thanks to its waterfalls and animal exhibits, the Waterfall Gardens are among the top day trips from San Jose. If you have your own transport, it’s best to book advance tickets to the nature park. Otherwise, full-day tours—both private and group tours—are available with transfers from San Jose. Some tours combine a visit to the Waterfall Gardens with nearby attractions, such as Poás Volcano National Park, coffee farm tours, and boat trips on the Sarapiqui River.

My Guide was Jesus (his second name). I very much liked everything on the tour. I really enjoyed Poas Volcano and learning about its history from Jesus. And the La Paz Waterfalls are not to be missed... they were breathtaking. I cannot express enough how amazing Jesus was. He was truly an Interpretive Guide who had incredible knowledge on everything we did throughout the tour. If I could give him 10 stars I would. Thank you again, Jesus!!

Poas Volcano + Coffee Plantations & La Paz Waterfall Gardens Trip from San Jose
This was an amazing tour! Our guide was so knowledgeable and explained so much history and culture throughout the day. Every stop was beautiful, plus he allowed for some extra stops for pictures and to buy fresh strawberries along the way. I highly recommend.

It's an excellent tour, where it was possible to know a little of the main attractions of Costa Rica. The tour guide was very friendly, explaining everything about each place visited.

Coffee Experience, Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens
Great experience! Our driver and tour guide were super nice! I could have personally done without the coffee plantation as even though it’s interesting it is a bit boring. But otherwise the experience was nice and met wonderful people on the trip also!

If you don't have a rent-a-car, this tour is the best option. And the guide Oscar Sandoval was the best too.

Day trip from San Jose to Wildlife Refuge La Paz Waterfall Gardens
We only got 1 day free to explore San Jose. We chose this Wildlife Refuge and waterfalls to get a little taste of the Costa Rican wildlife and nature. The Refuge is incredibly well design, kept, and harmonized with nature. The falls were beautiful and there were several trails to see them from all angles. My husband and I were extremely satisfied. It is also great for photographers, and my husband happens to be one.

Private Puntarenas Shore Excursion: Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens
An awesome tour. We had an amazing driver, Cali, that was very informative. He also walked the entire tour with us explaining things. I've had other tour drivers not speak and stay next to their vehicles. Again, Cali is your man! The downside to this tour was it was not approximately 5 hours. It's an all day tour. The drive from Puntarenas was over 2 hours. Also try to get to the volcano before 10 am as the clounds tend to roll in.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • This is a great stop for families with children as even younger kids can manage the walking trails.

  • Wear shoes with a good tread to manage the sometimes slippery trails.

  • The trails are well maintained, but several sets of stairs mean that not every area is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs.

When to Get There

The dry season, from December to April, is the most popular time to visit Costa Rica. If you visit then, be sure to secure tickets in advance, as popular attractions and tours fill quickly. Find lower prices, fewer crowds, and a bit more rain from May through November—when the waterfalls and forest are especially lush.

Outdoor Activities in the Central Valley

Rushing rivers and emerald-colored coffee plantations make the Central Valley one of Costa Rica’s scenic gems. Don't miss white-water rafting the Pacuare River (Río Pacuare); hiking around the crater of Irazu Volcano National Park; and soaking in the natural hot pools at Tabacon Hot Springs. Try to make time to visit coffee farms in the area too, such as historic Doka Estate.
