The Basics

While the Jewish community once played a key role on the Iberian Peninsula, Jewish people were expelled in 1492 during the Spanish Inquisition. Córdoba’s synagogue and two others in the city of Toledo remain as the only lasting structures of their kind from pre-Inquisition Spain.

With a humble brick exterior, the small temple has intricate Hebrew inscriptions on the interior walls, scalloped archways, and Mudejar plasterwork that’s reminiscent of the ivory-colored carvings in the Alcázar of Seville. After the Spanish Inquisition, the synagogue was used as a hospital, a chapel, and a school. Now, it is open to the public as a museum of Jewish culture in Spain. Visit as part of a cultural walking tour, or on a day trip from Madrid.

Cordoba Full Day Trip with Mosque Direct Entry from Malaga
We were lucky with very good guides: Jesus from Malaga and Maria from Cordoba. They shared with us not only historical and geographical facts, but also personal experiences and opinions. We appreciated this.

Tour could have better content

Mosque of Cordoba, Jewish Quarter & Synagogue DayTrip from Seville
The tour guide Christina was excellent, but we are not very happy with the content of the tour. We spent more time in Alcazar, which is much less interesting than in Sevilla, than in Mosque, which is the main Cordoba attraction.

Classic Cordoba: Mosque, Synagogue, and Jewish Quarter Guided Tour
The tour was perfectly organised by Viator starting right on time. Our guide, Cristina, did a marvellous job, taking us around the Judería and into the synagogue ending up in the mosque-cathedral. Than you again Cristina and Viator. We got really value for our money.

Cordoba: Mosque,Cathedral, Alcazar & Synagogue with Skip the Line Tickets
This was such a lovely tour. We visited the Alcazar, Jewish Quarter, and the Mezquita. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, friendly and kept us on track. I would give this activity a 5-star review but we were not given any free-time to explore on our own (and do some shopping) and by the end of the tour, our group of 5 expanded to close to 40 people at which point the intimacy that we felt at the beginning of the tour was completely lost and therefore, we felt less inclined to ask questions.

Cordoba: Mosque,Cathedral, Alcazar & Synagogue with Skip the Line Tickets
The official Cordoba tours is actually 3 tours linked together: 1. Visit to Alcazar, 2. Visit to the Jewish quarter, 3. Mezquita. We took the whole tour, but were accompanied by different participants. Same guide though. Very knowledgeable and very professional. There were little 5 minutes stops between the 3, so guestes could depart or come into the group. I found it a very compact tour to find out the most important aspect of the main Cordoba monuments. We would have missed so much if we would have gone only on our own. Highly recommended!

Things to Know Before You Go

How to Get There

The synagogue is located near one of the busiest avenues in the city, Conde Vallellano Avenue, at the back of the Red Cross Hospital in the Jewish Quarter. It can be tricky to find parking in the area, so public transportation is recommended. It’s accessible via bus lines: 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 16, 01, and 02.

When to Get There

The synagogue is closed Monday, Christmas Day, and January 1 and 6. In order to avoid the crowds and bypass large tour groups, plan to arrive early in the morning or late in the day. Peak tourist months are April, May, and June, so expect to encounter the most visitors then.

The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba

Another significant religious site in Córdoba, the Mosque-Cathedral (Mezquita de Córdoba) is considered one of the most exquisite Islamic structures in the Western world. It features a range of architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, and baroque, and it is often a stop on guided tours of the city, along with the synagogue.
