The Basics

Besalú makes a fine base for exploring the region's hiking and climbing opportunities, including the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone (la Zona Volcánica de la Garrotxa), with more than 40 dormant volcanic cones surrounded by protected forests. It’s also a popular day-trip option from nearby Barcelona. A typical day trip includes a tour of the medieval town’s highlights, often combined with a visit to the nearby town of Girona, Pals, Vic, or Santa Pau. Alternatively, a private tour focusing on the region’s Jewish heritage may include the old Jewish quarter and Museum of Jewish History in Girona and the remains of a medieval synagogue in Besalú.

Private: Girona and Besalu Jewish History Tour from Girona
We cannot say enough about the phenomenal tour guides who showed us a perfectly wonderful day in Girona and Besalu. Marc and Carmen are extremely capable, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Don't consider seeing these beautiful medieval cities with any other guides than Marc & Carmen/Viator! You will be very happy & well cared for. Gorgeous cities!

Our guide Oriol could not have been more informative, patient and entirely gracious. He spent the day proudly guiding us with explicit, fascinating history of Vic, Castellfollit de la Roca and Besalu. I highly recommend this tour!

Private: Girona and Besalu Jewish History Tour from Girona
Marc and Carmen were incredibly knowledgeable about Girona and Besalu, as well as accommodating and friendly. I chose pickup from the Girona train station, and transportation was a comfortable new air conditioned van. The mikveh at Besalu is not to be missed.

Besalú, Rupit & Vic small group and hotel pick up from Barcelona
The trip and the guide was great, we had a leisure tour outside of Barcelona. If you enjoy exploring some villages, don't miss it. With the help of a good guide you can learn more about Spain. :)

Girona and Besalu, Jewish History tour Small Group from Girona
Spectacular tour of Jewish history in Girona and Besalu. We ended up being the only ones on the tour, but Marc and Carmen did not disappoint. Marc was amazing with his knowledge of Jewish history and culture, pointing out not just the obvious things but also small facts and things that are personal to someone with Jewish heritage. We went to Besalu first, which was crucial to beating tour bus crowds. We had the city to ourselves. Carmen obtained the mikveh key and we were the only ones in there. In Girona, thew Jewish museum was great, and our tour of the town featured interesting stories of other religions and Spanish history. Can't say enough about Marc - he answered every question from historical and current points of view, and he really cared that we understood what he was saying. This tour was a highlight of our time in Spain. We caught an early train from Barcelona just for the day, and it was totally worth it.

What a great tour! We really enjoyed seeing the areas surrounding Barcelona. Our guide was from Vic, so she was very knowledgeable about the region. We went on a Saturday, and there is a great traditional Spanish market in Vic! In Vic we were also able to buy bread remains of wafers from some Cloister Nuns, which was a neat experience. Besalu is a very authentic medieval town. Would highly recommend!

Private: Girona and Besalu Jewish History Tour from Girona
Our private tour with Carmen and Marc was fantastic! We saw so much and Marc even adjusted our tour when he heard we were Game of Thrones fans. We loved learning the Jewish History and the places we toured were amazing! What a fantastic day we had and our pictures are treasures! We made memories to last a lifetime! Very comfortable and safe ride with Carmen and Marc is very knowledgeable, friendly, kind, and professional. He made sure we enjoyed every minute of our tour. Our family loved the lunch of Tapas Marc suggested. It was great to see the clips of Game of Thrones on his iPad and then go to that exact location on our tour. We are so grateful we chose this tour and would highly recommend any tour with Carmen and Marc.

Besalú & 4 Medieval Towns Tour from Barcelona with Hotel Pick-Up in Small Group
What started as a small gr4oup tour ended up as a private tour. Our guide, Elizabet, picked us up in a private car and explained that their were too many people in the group so we got a private tour. Both the tour and Elizabet were great. Got a lot of information and saw some things that I am not sure we would have seen if we were in a group. Elizabet was great and responded to all of our questions and needs.

How to Get There

Located 81 miles (131 kilometers) northeast of Barcelona, Besalú isn't yet connected to the Spanish train system. For those relying on public transit, direct buses run from Girona, 21 miles (34 kilometers) away, and, much less frequently, Barcelona. You could also take the train from Barcelona to Girona; Besalú buses leave from just outside. Virtually all Besalú tours from Barcelona and Girona include round-trip transportation.

When to Get There

Besalú enjoys a mild climate throughout much of the year, though you should expect cold, sunny days in winter and hot afternoons in summer. Since the town isn’t connected to the rail network, it rarely gets crowded, making it a good option to escape the high season crowds in Barcelona.

La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park

If you’re lingering in Besalú for more than a day trip, definitely set aside some time to explore the volcanic terrain of this beautiful park. More than two dozen signposted walking trails lead to some of the park’s most important landmarks, including lava flows and volcanic cones.
