The basics

The museum contains the most celebrated collection of Minoan art and cultural antiquities anywhere in the world, bringing together over 15,000 historical artifacts, large and small, from all over Crete. Curated both chronologically and thematically across nearly 30 rooms, together it tells the story of cultural, social, and economic life on the island during ancient times.

Along with everyday items like household utensils, pottery, and jewelry; the museum also showcases an impressive range of sculptures, as well as famous pieces like the golden bee pendant, golden ring of King Minos, Hagia Triada sarcophagus, and famous Linear B tablets from Knossos. The museum building was constructed in the 1930s on the original site of the Friary of St. Francis, which was destroyed by a 19th-century earthquake. Wander the gardens to glimpse some of the former friary ruins.

Knossos-Arch.Museum-Heraklion City - Full Day Private Tour from Chania
Loved our guide, Christine and our driver. They were very professional, great fun and full of great information on Knossos and Crete in general. They went above and beyond to make sure we had a good time including packing us a great local lunch and finishing with two kinds of Raki and local candy. The tour was relaxed and we had plenty of time to see everything. Highly recommended.

Knossos-Archaeological Museum-Heraklion City - Full Day Tour from Chania
Well worth it! We ended up on a ‘private tour’ due to C19 cancellations. Christine and Thanasis were welcoming, relaxed, informative and flexible. The mini bus was well equipped, modern and comfortable, including wifi and Covid necessities. The ‘snack’ was very filling and there were plentiful drinks including alcohol. Christine and Thanasis were lovely! What more can I say? Highly recommended. Made an unscheduled stop at Lake Kournas, because we wanted to see it.

Knossos-Arch.Museum-Heraklion City - Full Day Private Tour from Chania
This was a full day trip from Chania to Knossos. We were greeted by the driver and tour guide who had a van for the three of us which was spacious and also had snacks and drinks as well. The 2 hours went by quickly as they provided videos and discussion of Crete, Knossos and Heraklion to provide enough background in order for us to know what we would be looking at. They gave us ample time in Heraklion to visit the museum and explore the City and have lunch. Highly recommend this tour operator as they were friendly, accommodating and again it was a comfortable ride and the drinks and snacks provided was just an added plus.

I would highly recommend that if you go to Knossos you also go to Archaeological Museum to help tied in all the history. Our guide Emmanuel, was super knowledgeable of the history and historical facts.

Knossos Museum and Heraklion tour from Rethymno
The tour was excellent. Visiting the palace and the museum on the same day with a guide was one of the best museum experiences I've ever had because of all the contextualization. Our guide was great. Just lacks earphones.

Knossos Palace Is a Must See

We didn’t really need these skip the lone tickets in October as there were no crowds. We enjoyed touring the site and felt we didn’t need a guide because we brought a guidebook with us.

We got to the Knossoss...

Skip the Line: Knossos Palace and Heraklion Archaeological Museum
We got to the Knossoss Palace right at 9:30 and were able to go right in, no real line. When we got to the Archeological Museum, around noon, we were made to wait in line for about 45 minutes. They said that there was no such thing as a 'Jump the line' ticket. I asked 2 different people and got the same answer. It was annoying but the museum was amazing and worth the wait.
