Mljet Island, Dubrovnik

The Basics

The island of Mljet is easy to visit on a day trip from Dubrovnik or Korcula. Nature lovers will adore Mljet National Park, where you can stroll along the lakeside paths, hire a bike to explore the island via its many paths, rent a kayak to paddle the lakes, or simply swim in the lake’s pristine waters. Visitors can also opt for a private speedboat or yacht cruise to explore the area. The park is not the only draw to the island, as Mljet is also a hot spot for scuba divers, and plenty of sandy beaches and natural caves are found on the eastern tip of Mljet.

Absolutely exceptional tour! Based out of the owners apartments in Lombardi on Korcula, each day was a fun adventure of either biking to wineries on great trails, boat and bike to Mljet, and kayaking to neighboring islands. Each was followed by a gourmet lunch. Excellent guides and friendly area.

Mljet National Park Day Trip from Dubrovnik
There were only three participants in this tour. The young guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. All organizational aspects worked well, with a fast catamaran ride to and from Dubrovnik, motor van to the lakes, motor boat to the Island of St Mary with a break to look around, another boat to the meeting place of the two lakes, three hours to do one's own thing and then van and ferry back to Dubrovnik. It is an excursion well worth doing.

Mljet National Park Day Trip from Dubrovnik
I went on three tours with Super Tours and I felt this one was a little disorganized long waiting time for bus and boat, meaning less time to explore the national park. If you have the time, I highly recommend going to Mljet NP for two days because one day isn't enough! It's a beautiful island and I wish we would have had time to do some hiking.

LOVED this tour. There were only 2 other people besides my daughter and I and I would encourage everyone to do this. Last reviews were from 2014 but this was more than worth every cent - go to Mljet ASAP

Great Tour. The service and the tour guide were excellent. Very kind with all the group. The place was amazing and beautiful. You can ride on bike, walk, swimming in the lakes, so you must to be ready for that. It's must to do when you visit Dubrovnik

Mljet National Park Day Trip from Dubrovnik
Great tour! We were picked up at the hotel in a nice Mercedes. It took us to the port where our guide already purchased the tickets for the catamaran. Our transport to the island took approx. 1h. The guide was friendly and made sure she left us enough time to be on our own. When arrived in the national park, we boarded a minivan that took us to a small boat. After a visit with some interesting facts we went to another island. On that island we had free time for 3h to swim and relax.

Mljet National Park Day Trip from Dubrovnik
Our tour guide, Anna from Spain was wonderful. She was friendly and energetic. Mljet is a beautiful island. We enjoyed the escape from Dubrovnik. The monastery was nice but not fantastic. Our favorite part was the swim. If you're not planning to swim, you'll find the day long and perhaps boring unless you're an avid hiker. I'd recommend this tour only if you have an extra day in Dubrovnik with time to spare. It's a long day, over 11 hours from pickup to drop off. The pacing of the tour could be improved. We waited on the dock for about an hour in the morning because of a too early pickup. On the island with the monastery we also had an hour when half would suffice. Our guide didn't know the boat timings well enough we discovered we had an extra 30 minutes on the island but by that time it was too late to eat lunch. Then we had 2 hours to walk about 1 mile to the swimming hole, swim and get back for transportation back to the port. At the port we had another 75 minutes to kill. This was our opportunity for lunch at 3pm. Perhaps the tour is constrained by the ferry service, but it would be nice to clump the free time together or give individuals choices about how to use all of the free time. For example, we would have opted to spend more time swimming and then eating lunch nearby and returning to the port later. There's little imparting of information here by the tour guide, merely shepherding you from point A to point B to point C, etc... Also as others have said, the two hour ferry ride each way is unimpressive. You can't go out on the deck to snap photos, nor is any narrative provided as to what islands or points of interest you may be passing.

Mljet National Park Day Trip from Dubrovnik
En route to Mljet by sea there are stunning views of the coastline and islands that you would not normally see only minor disappointment was that there was no commentary on the boat identifying the islands and coastline. The large island of Mljet has a monastery floating in the lake which after a short boat ride you visit, views from the top of the monastery are stunning. A further short boat ride takes you to another inland lake which you explore at your leisure, walking, cycling, swimming, or just relaxing enjoying the surrounding scenery and wildlife. Would highly recommend this trip.

When to Get There

Mljet Island and Mljet National Park can be visited year-round. In winter (from November through March), the ferries from Dubrovnik run less often, so you may have to spend the night on the island to ensure you have enough time to explore the park. Visiting Mljet Island on a guided tour from Dubrovnik is one of the most convenient ways to visit the island in winter.

Visiting Odysseus' Cave on Mljet Island

Legend has it, Mljet is the ancient Ogygia from Homer’s Odyssey. After allegedly being shipwrecked, Odysseus swam to this cave where he met the beautiful Calypso and was so captivated by her that he spent the next seven years living on the island. You can visit the cave by boat or by walking from the village of Babino Polje.
