Walk to the cascade and marabout of Sidi Mbark & for a tea to Kaouki.

Walk to the cascade and marabout of Sidi Mbark & for a tea to Kaouki.

star-5
9
This half-day excursion takes us to Sidi Mbark, a small Berber village 35 km south of Essaouira. We walk to a little cascade and close by visit the old Marabout (residence for the spirit of a Saint or wise man). Here, the convergence of a large sand dune, a small river, and an imposing rock splendidly frames a lovely bay. The stream brings some water (water level depends on season/rainfall) into this very dry region to irrigate local crops. The landscape offers a rich interplay of green, blue and yellow. As it rests on the rocks, the Marabout that gave its name to the village speaks of former times. Walking time is approx. 40 minutes to reach the cascade and 30 minutes back (round trip, plus time for several stops). If you have kids and you’re not sure if they will make the entire walk, get the donkey to take the strain! On the way back to Essaouira we will have tea or coffee at Sidi Kaouki, a relaxed surfers’ village, where we will enjoy a beautiful view over the large sandy beach. As we will be driving through the Argan zone, you have the option to visit an Argan oil cooperative and learn about the production of this beautiful oil - in all the world, a product unique to this area. They will offer us a taste of the lovely things they make with it, too. Very likely you will see the famous goats in the trees on this tour to the south of Essaouira.

Argan Forest, tea time at a Berbers family & Visit of an Argan cooperative.

A large section of this walk takes you through an Argan forest. Argan trees are an endemic species only found in the south west of Morocco and a mythical emblem of the Essaouira region. This is a relatively easy walk suitable for people looking for a leisurely ramble. Throughout the hike, the guide will give you useful insights into the ecology of these trees. You will thus be able to observe the different stages of a tree‛s life cycle until it reaches maturity; you will also learn about the many different products derived from the trees and their fruit as well as the beneficial impact on the local culture. You will walk through a little village where there is a ‘Marabout‛ -or saint‛s temple- featuring elements dating back to the 16th century, and later you will be served tea at a Berber villager‛s and experience first-hand traditional Moroccan hospitality. At the end of the walking tour, you will visit a women's cooperative where you will discover the secret of making the famous argan oil.

Walk between Argan Forest, Ocean & Waterfalls.

Walk between Argan Forest, Ocean & Waterfalls.

star-5
7
We walk through an area of euphorbia and Argan trees before we reach the ocean and enjoy ourselves hiking a long untouched beach until we turn towards the beautiful Sidi m'Barek waterfalls. We then enter the terrace fields where locals grow crops throughout the whole year. We then walk uphill in the canyon up to the village of Sidi Ahmed Essayeh. There we are welcomed by a Moroccan family for a taste of tagine simmered in a solar cooker. This fairly sporty and lengthy hike allows you to meet beautiful people and admire sumptuous, divers landscapes... Enjoy a nice encounter with a French speaking Berber family.

Cliffline & Cascade Hike.

Cliffline & Cascade Hike.

star-5
5
This excursion takes us to Sidi Mbark, a small Berber village 35 km south of Essaouira. We walk along the amazing cliff line overlooking beautiful bays below. We visit the cascade beside an old Marabout (residence for the spirit of a Saint or wise man). Discover nature at its best. Here, the convergence of a large sand dune, a small river, and an imposing rock splendidly frames a lovely bay. The stream brings some water into this very dry region to irrigate local crops. The landscape offers a rich interplay of green, blue and yellow. As it rests on the rocks, the Marabout that gave its name to the village speaks of former times. The hike now takes us southwards on winding paths through rolling hills. Along the way we encounter shepherds with goats and sheep. The trek provides panoramic views of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean to the horizon. Walking above the bays we come upon stone houses where fishermen store their gear used to eke out a living from the sea. On the return hike we stop at a bay for a refreshing swim (optional). Then, surrounded by beautiful scenery, we enjoy a vegetarian picnic at the waterfall of Sidi Mbark. The walking time of 3.5 to 4 hours can be adjusted to your needs and desires.

A Sunset Stroll to the Sultans Palace in Diabat.

We meet about 1.5h before sunset. This one-hour ramble through the dunes and along the riverbed of Oued Ksob will allow you to encounter the richness of the natural environment around Essaouira. You will discover a former Sultan‛s palace, which over time has surrendered to the sand and now sits in state in the midst of a wild nature. This huge sanded palace, dating back to the foundation of Essaouira in the 18th century invites you to dream of times gone by.
