Wailua River

Highway 56, Wailua, Hawaii, 96746

The Basics

The best way to soak in the natural beauty of the Wailua River is from the water itself, and there are several options to do so. Many travelers paddle the waters by kayak; these trips often include a short hike to a waterfall for swimming. It’s also possible to explore by stand-up paddleboard or outrigger canoe. More comprehensive island tours sometimes include an open-air boat trip along the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto, a spectacular lava rock cave surrounded by draping ferns. Those traveling by car can follow the north side of the river along Kuamoo Road (Highway 580).

Wailua River Kayak and Sacred Fall Hike Adventure
This was a great trip - lot's of fun. I would have given it 5 stars if we were able to hike to the Sacred Falls. Due to weather conditions we were not able to. I appreciated the guides professional knowledge and decision not to go. Safety first!

Wailua River Kayak and Sacred Fall Hike Adventure
Micheal was amazing and full of information. We weren’t sure we’d make it to the falls because of so much rain that morning but Micheal was determined and checked the safety of crossing the stream and gave us a heads up. Our group was amazing so everybody was up for it.

Wailua River and Secret Falls Kayak and Hiking Tour on Kauai
This was a amazing adventure for our family and the highlight of our visit to Kaui. The guide, Brian, paddle with us up the river and talked about the history of the surrounding area. Then we hiked through 4 water water crossing and step over many rocks and tree roots to get to our beautiful water fall, Secret Falls. Many of us swam in the pool and hid behind the fall water. Our guide Brian did a great job and loves sharing his stories with us about this magical place.

Having the opportunity to both kayak and hike to get to the waterfall. Then swim in the basin and walk behind the waterfall. Exhilarating!!!

Wailua River Kayak and Sacred Fall Hike Adventure
Great adventure and awesome tour guides. Our tour guide is also an environmental biologist, which made the tour very informative about the landscape and animals on the island. The kayaking had nice calm water and very beautiful greenery. The hike and waterfall was amazing. Highly recommend this tour for all levels.

Wailua River and Secret Falls Kayak and Hiking Tour on Kauai
Our tour guide was great. He had a lot of information to give us, cracked some jokes, and even sang songs. He made sure that everyone made it safely, especially the slower ones in the group. The river was very beautiful and the hike was pretty fun. We had plenty of time at the waterfalls to swim, eat, and take pics.

Wailua River and Secret Falls Kayak and Hiking Tour on Kauai
Brian was a joy to have as a guide! He was kind, caring and so fun! (And his knowledge of Madonna songs was impressive!) Our entire group laughed and smiled from the time we got in the river until we returned. The paddle was refreshing, the hike was beautiful, the waterfall was magical and we all felt so fortunate to have had this experience. We all highly recommend. 5 stars! (Also, take the early morning tour to avoid the heat & crowds!)
