Lake Garda

The Basics

Lake Garda has something for everyone. Hikers and landscape lovers can explore the northern reaches of the lake, where peaks rise dramatically from the water and the slopes are thick with trails and picture-perfect towns such as Torbole. Gourmands and sybarites should hang out on the southern shore, home to spas and wineries. If you’re more of a history buff, don’t miss the medieval castle and Roman ruins in Sirmione. And families can head to Gardaland, an amusement park.

To avoid the hassle of getting to Lake Garda on your own, book a tour of the area with round-trip transport included. Boat tours include free time to wander the resort towns, romantic sunset tours are a relaxing way to take in the views, and wine-tasting tours whisk you around to some of the region’s best vineyards. If you’re going to Gardaland, buy tickets in advance to avoid the long lines.

Frederic the tour leader was knowledgeable, fluent and personable. The tour was well organized and exceeded expectations. Frederick's knowledge of the history, culture and geography of the region was very informative.

Full-day Lake Garda Tour
A great introduction to Lake Garda. Its a bit whistle stop, but gives you a chance to see where on the lake to would like to visit for longer. The driver and guide were very good and kept the journey interesting. Its a long day but well worth it at the beginning of a Lake Garda stay.

Venice Full-Day Tour from Lake Garda
Although a long trip, well worth the trouble. Guide was knowledgeable and friendly with a good sense of humour, which made the day even better. Everything was well organised and went very smoothly. Highly recommended.

Venice Full-Day Tour from Lake Garda
On a very hot day 37+" lots to see and admire. Drawbacks there are no seats anywhere so to sit down you have to visit a bar. Tour rep with Viator was excellent thought our day.

Land of Venice: Verona, Lake Garda and countryside Small-group Tour
Our tour was booked online. To our surprise we were the only two that had booked it but the company goes not matter how many on tour. The driver and tour guide, Francesca, was very knowledgeable and took us to Verona, Borghetto where we tasted food from that region and to Lake Garda for a boat ride. While in Verona, our tour guide, Priscilla, took us for a two hour walking tour of Verona. She was very knowledgeable also knew Verona"s history and art and answered all of our questions. Both these young ladies are an asset to their company, Veronality.

Full-day Lake Garda Tour
Really is the best tour to see the villages/towns around the lake. Tour guide was very informative and had a sence of humour. Stopped for around an hour at each place (Riva for two hours so you could have lunch) for you to wander. Very comfortable coach. Will do this tour again. Colin UK

Excellent value for money if you...

Venice Full-Day Tour from Lake Garda
Excellent value for money if you want to do Venice in a day . Guides were excellent well informed providing some scholarly background knowledge to the city of islands. Everything included in the price with the bonus of a ' go ' in a Gondola which you share with fellow travellers otherwise it would cost a fortune ! giving you a completely different perspective of the city from canal level.

Venice Full-Day Tour from Lake Garda
Wonderful day trip to Venice. Everything was organised perfectly. However, avoid the food added option. Not great food and lots of other options around for the same price. Great day though and our guide was lovely.

Venice Full-Day Tour from Lake Garda
Guide Tomas was fun and friendly. The day was very hot - so we took all boat rides he offered. And we are happy we did it. Also lunch offered by viator was good: large portions, a lot of drinks and small dessert was very nice surprise all included in 15EUR.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Plan to spend a lot of time outdoors—dress for the weather.

  • Rent equipment or hire instructors for water sports at the beaches along the southern shore.

  • For views overlooking the lake and Riva del Garda, ride the gondola to the top of Monte Baldo.

  • Take a boat from Salò to the private island of Isola di Garda to tour the neo-Gothic Venetian villa and grounds owned by Contessa Cavazza.

  • Fans of the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio can visit his vast Il Vittoriale degli Italiani estate, as eclectic as the writer himself, above Gardone Riviera on the western shore.

Garda’s Waterfall

The landscape north of Riva del Garda is dominated by rugged mountains and glacial lakes and rivers. Stop by and marvel at the striking Cascata del Varone, a theatrical waterfall that has carved a corkscrew-shaped vertical gorge through the cliffside.
