South Lake Tahoe

Mt Tallac Road B trail head, South Lake Tahoe, California

The Basics

South Lake Tahoe is a year-round destination with a particular appeal to outdoor enthusiasts. In summer, an extensive network of walking paths, bike trails, and campsites offer myriad ways to enjoy the lake and its surrounding forests, including Emerald Bay State Park (just a few miles north of town). In winter, skiers and snowboarders flock to the region to experience some of California’s best ski resorts, including Heavenly and Squaw Valley. For something even more serene, strap on a pair of snowshoes and take an off-the-beaten-path winter hike through the fresh powder.

Don't drive Lake Tahoe without this app!

Ultimate Lake Tahoe Self-Driving Audio Tour
This was a great value and enhanced our visit tremendously. The narrator is triggered by your GPS location so you always know what you are viewing, a bit of history and fun facts and your options to get a closer look. I downloaded the entire app before our trip to make it available offline, even with no cell service. It worked perfectly. I highly recommend this audio tour!

Great way to spend some time with family in the car. Enjoyed the stories. Maybe it was me, but at some points of the tour, it was difficult to stop and look at what he was talking about.

We really enjoyed this tour! Our hotel was on the north side of Lake Tahoe, so we were hoping to be able to start it from our location instead of the South Lake Tahoe starting point. I called customer service and was basically told that starting from a different point wasn’t advisable. So, we drove 30 minutes to the starting point and began our tour. Loved it! I’m glad we can do it again in the future because we plan to come back!

The only issue we had was in beginning of the tour when it was confusing for us as to how to back and forth between the audio and the maps. After a little while we got it.

We only got about 1/4 the way around the lake but the audio tour was excellent! Full of stories and trivia in between the sights. An enjoyable travel companion.

More than a 3 hour tour

Ultimate Lake Tahoe Self-Driving Audio Tour
The 2-3 hour tour turned into an 8 hour event. We took one of the side trip suggestions to Fallen Leaf. Learned about the Good Indian and the fallen leaf legend. Heard about the Ong and history of the area. Stopped at casinos we hadn’t stopped at before. Skipped Camp Richardson area as we had visited before. Visited Emerald Bay and some new to us pull offs. Packed our lunch so we could eat on our schedule. Not sure how this would be 2-3 hours unless you never get out of your car.

The best time to visit South Lake Tahoe? That depends on what you like to do. Non-skiers tend to enjoy the area in early fall and late spring, when the crowds are thinner, the prices are lower, and the weather is consistently beautiful.
