Enjoyable evening in Chiado!
Music of singers and guitarists were very good! A nice sampling of fado music. Would have loved to have known a little bit about each song that was sung.

Beautiful place. Beautiful people. Beautiful atmosphere. Catchy songs.. amazing interaction with the audience. The voices are wonderful, the guitar players amazing. Honestly it’s worth the money, I feel it’s worth more than what I paid for. Also, they should have a TIP jar.

What a charming little show. Performers were enthusiastic and the Portuguese guitar player was wonderful. The singers put you in the mood to be wistful? Longing? without being sad or morbid. I don’t understand Portuguese at all but I really enjoyed the performances and for me the length of time was perfect.

My fiancé and I really enjoyed this short Fado performance. The location was very easy to find. The theatre is small, seating maybe 50-75 people, so all of the seats are great. Performance was about an hour, leaving plenty of time for dinner afterwards in the chic Baixa-Chiado area. Had both a male and female performer. Everything is in Portuguese, but the strong emotions expressed in Fado transcend language.

What a lovely show at a grand theater in the Chiado section of Lisbon. It was a 50 minute show-enough for a flavor of their famous singing and lovely music- its a nice way to support the arts in any country. Comfy seats. Good talent and the guitar musicians were masters. Nice to see it one evening while in Lisbon.

Being a Portuguese tradition we wanted...

Being a Portuguese tradition we wanted to see what it was like. The show is 50 minutes long and you are not allowed to take any pictures during the show. There are 2 musicians and 2 singers. There is very minimal interactivity between the singers and audience they ask audience to repeat a few words and sounds in 2 songs. The show would be a lot better if they explained more the songs or interacted more with the public. Overall enjoyable and recommended.

My partner wanted to visit somewhere to experience some Fado music and we didn't want the time and expense of going somewhere for dinner so this was a great alternative. Approximately a 50 min show where I thought the gentleman playing the smaller guitar was the star of the show as he was so talented! The other gentleman playing the normal size guitar seemed slightly bored resting his chin on the guitar a few times. This is in a theatre so there's no food or drink allowed and certainly no bar!

Fado in Chiado* is a must-do for anyone interested in music or the arts.

  • Unlike many fado performances, which take place in taverns, Fado in Chiado is set in a theater.

  • Kids under age 4 are not allowed, while those age 4–6 get free entry.

Characteristics of Fado

Portugal's most celebrated art form, fado is characterized by songs dominated by melancholic themes, often (but not always) performed by female vocalists. Accompanying instruments include classical guitars, Portuguese guitars, and viola baixos, a local spin on an acoustic bass. While fado is believed to have originated in Lisbon, there's also a style from the city of Coimbra that's only performed by men.
