The Basics

Sirmione has been a popular resort town since the first century BC, largely due to its thermal hot springs. Check out the village’s charming medieval center, the 13th-century Scaliger Castle (Castello Scaligero or Rocca Scaligera), and the Grottoes of Catullus, remains of a Roman villa named for a poet whose family lived in Sirmione in the first century BC.

Day trips from Milan, Bergamo, and Venice often pair visits to Sirmione and Desenzano del Garda with a stop in the romantic city of Verona. Or, enjoy views of Sirmione and Garda Island from the water on a Lake Garda mini-cruise or sunset cruise.

Worthwhile
Excellent short boat ride, great to see the Roman ruins and castle from a different angle. Had to wear masks and sit apart from others but this was fine. Some commentary from the driver but not the highlight.

Sunset Tour in Sirmione
It was a great experience. Getting to see the sunset over such an amazing landscape. The captain of the boat put on music as we cruised around the coast of Sirmione. We all had two glasses of prosecco. Great value for money.

Sunset Tour in Sirmione
It was the perfect end for a perfect first day!! I can’t recommend highly enough this experience. Being on the lake watching the sun draw to a close was magical. Mother Nature at her finest. The nice music in the background and the chilled Prosecco was a fantastic touch. You get to see hidden places of the peninsula that you wouldn’t be able to see on foot. Good value for money. There are similar experiences available, a bit cheaper, but you don’t get to enjoy the sunset as much, the glass of Prosecco and the nice music on the background. Highly recommend!!

Magnificent views aboard a boat

Sunset Tour in Sirmione
Booking was easy. Really good value so we were anxious as to what to expect. Able to call ahead as we thought we might be running a few minutes late to which they were sympathetic. Views were stunning and route was great. Nice touch with the bottles of Prosecco which were free flowing. Options available for non-alcohol drinkers. Didn't speed around the water too fast thereby making the journey enjoyable for all. Informative tour with nuggets of interest. The finale under the bridge was an excellent touch. We would have missed out on Sirmione had it not been for this tour. Good job! (suggest operators choose a more neutral music choice. We didn't mind but some other guests were understandably irritated by this)

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Sirmione’s historic center is accessible to pedestrians, strollers, and wheelchairs only, so wear comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunscreen.

  • Though the town is accessible to wheelchairs, parts of the castle and Roman villa are not.

  • With its dramatic turrets and towers, Scaliger Castle can be a fun stop for kids.

  • Views over the lake from the village and castle are excellent, so don’t forget your camera.

Sirmione’s Historic Scaliger Castle

Built by the powerful Scaliger (aka Della Scala) dynasty from Verona to protect Sirmione from attack, Scaliger Castle’s fortified walls and crenelated towers shelter the harbor once used by the Scaliger fleets. The fortress was used as a garrison until the 19th century, but lost its strategic importance after the unification of Italy.
