The Basics

There are many options for exploring Old Lyon, from walking tours and standard or electric bike tours to Segway jaunts and hop-on hop-off bus excursions. In addition to Old Lyon, city tours often visit neighborhoods such as La Croix-Rousse and the Presqu’île and ride the funicular up to the Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière for impressive city views. Lyon Walking Tour with Great Guide Toni
The walking tour was fantastic. Our guide Toni was amazing. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and provided us with a ton of information about to make the most of our trip to Lyon. I highly recommend this tour. Seeing the old town and taking the funicular up to see 2000 year old Roman ruins was amazing.

Lyon Old Town Half-Day Walking Food Tour with Local Specialties Tasting & Lunch
4-4.5 stars just because our guide was more a history buff than a foodie. We tasted cheese, meats, tastes from a traditional bouchon, chocolate, wine, dessert and a look at silk making.

Walking Food Tour in Vieux Lyon
The guide, Eileen, did a tremendous job taking us on a tour of Lyon Vieux. There were 5 of us of different parts of the world. She is very knowledgable about local customs and history. She took us to a restaurant where we ate a lunch of local specialities and to a sweet shop to try a type of sweet bread, another place for cheese and wine tasting where she explained about the cheeses we were eating and the wine we were drinking.

Lyon Old Town Half-Day Walking Food Tour with Local Specialties Tasting & Lunch
Natalie was an excellent guide, bubbling with enthusiasm. The tour started with cheese and white wine, on to a bouchon for local specialities and red wine. Next a sausage maker for cold meats and more wine and then a chocolate shop for chocolate and black beer. A stop at a silk makers was followed by praline tart. A great tour full of historical facts and the opportunity to try local food without having to have a whole meal. One of the best culinary tours we have done.

Lyon Big Traboules in Little City Stories from the Past Private Guided Tour
So enjoyed our three hour tour with Konstantin. He was very knowledgeable about the City and we enjoyed hearing about the history and various stories. Took into consideration our age and tour was paced accordingly. Took us to places we would not have seen. So worthwhile. Thank you Konstantin for a great experience. Highly recommended.

Lyon Highlights & Secrets Walking Guided Tour (small group) including Funicular
This was a very interesting tour and Toni was helpful and well-informed. Finding out the history of a place gives you a better understanding of when you are there. The Traboules were particularly interesting as well as the links with renaissance Italy. A really well spent morning.

Lyon City Historic Neighborhoods Guided Walking Tour (English)
The tour is absolutely great. Paul is an incredible tour guide. He is very knowledgeable, entertaining, and easy to understand. He does two separate tours and they are both a great introduction to the city. But they are FREE tours. You can book directly through him at FreeToursLyon.com. He works from the tips. Viator is charging for something that is totally free.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Old Lyon is a must-see for history buffs and first-time visitors.

  • The narrow lanes of Vieux Lyon are mostly pedestrianized and best explored on foot—wear comfortable shoes.

  • The majority of cafés and restaurants can be found along Rue Tramassac, but the quayside bars and restaurants offer the best views at night.

How to Get There

Old Lyon stretches along the left bank of the Saône River, with Fourviére Hill rising to the west. It’s a short stroll across the bridge from Place Bellecour or Place des Jacobins, and the closest metro station is Vieux Lyon (line D). Funiculars for Fourvière Hill also run from this station.

When to Get There

Explore the streets of Old Lyon in the morning to avoid the crowds and take photos of the beautiful historical buildings, or visit in the evening to dine along the riverfront. The most spectacular time to visit Old Lyon is during the annual Festival of Lights in December, when dazzling light projections brighten up landmarks such as Saint John the Baptist Cathedral (Cathédrale-Saint-Jean-Baptiste, or Lyon Cathedral).

Architecture of Vieux Lyon

With buildings dating from as early as the 11th century, the streets of Vieux Lyon are bursting with architectural treasures. The star attraction is Saint John the Baptist Cathedral, with its stunning stained glass windows and striking mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Nearby are the Maison du Crible mansion, with its much-photographed pink tower, and a number of historical traboules (narrow alleyways). In the northern Saint Paul quarter, the Gothic Maison du Consul and the grand Hotel Gadagne (now part of the Musées Gadagne) are notable highlights, while the Saint Georges quarter was Lyon’s original silk-weaving area and is home to the riverfront Church of Saint George (Église Saint-Georges).
