The Basics

Located in the center of Madeira, north of the capital Funchal, Pico Arieiro has been drawing visitors to its impressive summit for many years. Looking out over the surrounding landscape from the peak is a surreal experience, as the top of the mountain is often above cloud level. On a clear day, visitors can look down onto clouds dotted below and the blue sky above and even see all the way to the neighboring island of Porto Santo, some 30 miles (48 kilometers) away.

From the summit, a hiking trail extends into the surrounding hills toward Pico Ruivo, the island’s highest peak. It’s a challenging walk, but the panoramic views are spectacular, even if you only venture a short distance along the trail. Visitors can opt to explore Pico do Arieiro as part of a guided island tour combined with other popular sites. Many small-group tours travel by 4WD vehicle in this area.

Truly Stunning hike, with fantastic staff providing transport
It is going to be truly difficult to find another hike that tops the majesty and beauty of this one in Madeira or anywhere. Incredible experience, made even better by meeting Kevin who drove us there and back. He was friendly, fun and completely professional. Cannot suggest this company and hike enough.

Self-Guided Sunrise Hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo Transfer
Felipe was an incredible guide who is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Madeira. So many great recommendations and historical tidbits. The trip through Santana on the way back was a great quick way to see the town and the traditional Madeiran houses as well. Also, Logan was very organized and easy to contact at any point for help, in addition to providing some great recommendations!

Nun's Valley & Arieiro Peak in 4x4 Half day Tour
We had so much fun on this tour with our incredible guide. He knew so much history about the island and kept us entertained the entire time. The views of the island on this tour are absolutely breathtaking. The off roading portion is only about a half hour but super fun. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the island!

Pico Arieiro To Pico Ruivo / Highest Peak Challenge
An incredible hike. Some warning / advice on what gear to being for the day would have been welcome as it was very hot, very sunny. Some poeple on the tour struggled, but our guide was very professional and took control of the situation.

Arieiro Peak, Nun´s Valley & Santo da Serra in 4x4 Half day Tour
What a great trip. The highlight for me was Pico Arieiro where the views were amazing, but all the viewing points we stopped at provided good views. Additionally, our driver, Gil, was passionate about his island, told us about life on Madeira, explained some of the ecological issues and twice stopped to show us plants/fruits he spotted by the side of the road. Thanks.

Going to parts that coaches could not reach and having the freedom to enjoy the day at our on pace. Our driver was thoughtful and gave us a lovely day. What he couldn’t do was improve the weather but it didn’t spoil anything.

A Wild Ride on the Monte Toboggan Run

For a one-of-a-kind Madeiran experience, hop on a wood-and-wicker sled for a thrilling ride—down paved streets, not pristine snow. Take the cable car from the capital Funchal up to the town of Monte and then step on board a sled (carro de cesto) for a quick zip back down the steep streets. Two experienced drivers ride behind the sled to steer you safely down the hill while you enjoy the ride.
