The Basics

Located in the center of Madeira, north of the capital Funchal, Pico Arieiro has been drawing visitors to its impressive summit for many years. Looking out over the surrounding landscape from the peak is a surreal experience, as the top of the mountain is often above cloud level. On a clear day, visitors can look down onto clouds dotted below and the blue sky above and even see all the way to the neighboring island of Porto Santo, some 30 miles (48 kilometers) away.

From the summit, a hiking trail extends into the surrounding hills toward Pico Ruivo, the island’s highest peak. It’s a challenging walk, but the panoramic views are spectacular, even if you only venture a short distance along the trail. Visitors can opt to explore Pico do Arieiro as part of a guided island tour combined with other popular sites. Many small-group tours travel by 4WD vehicle in this area.

Patience was well rewarded ;)
I tried three times to get to this tour. In December, the Master of the Weather is moody even in Madeira. Patience was well rewarded: the timing of me taking this hike was just perfect! Perfect sunrise followed by a perfect hike. Big thanks to Pico Transfers - I'm not sure if I would have got the same experience otherwise.

Excellent service by Kevin and Elisabeth. The trip was awesome, made all three better by the fantastic weather. The hike is challenging though and i think it should state more clearly that a good level of fitness is needed.

Sunrise Transfer To Pico Do Arieiro, Hike To Pico Ruivo & Return From Teixeira
Due to the weather conditions we could not do the tour that we booked for. However, the Viator team was very efficient, and professional, and asked us if we could and would like to do the tour at another time, which we did. Everything took place as planed, picking up times both at home and after the tour. The pandemic hygienic procedures were carried on at all times. We really enjoyed it and would be happy to book with Viator again.

Madeira Jeep 4x4: Old Forest Full-Day Tour incl Pico Arieiro
The guide, Mauricio, is very knowledgeable about the Madeira island and its wonderful places, history, plant and animal life. Combine this tour with the West tour next day again with Mauricio and you practically don't need anything else in Madeira sightseeing-wise. You will get to see all the places that you need to see in Madeira even those that are inaccessible with a normal car, Mauricio's Defender makes all the worthwhile places accessible, and then some! :-) Thoroughly recommended!

Pico Arieiro To Pico Ruivo / Highest Peak Challenge
This is possibly the most famous hike in Madeira and its easy to see why. The views are quite simply stunning. The tour team were friendky and knowledgeable and pointed out lots of things we might have missed. There was 15 in our group which was quite large but actually didn't seem to matter at all as most of the walk is single file and we just followed a sensible pace and absolutely weren't all bunched up. The walk itself is pretty tiring, nothing too extreme but you're going to need to be reasonably fit. We had perfect weather and I'm not sure how you guarantee this, but low visibility/cloud cover would spoil things.

Pico Do Arieiro / Pico Ruivo
One of the best hike I've done in my life. The scenery is very beautiful. The hike is a bit strenuous, especially when the weather is shiny, but it's worth it. I recommend booking the tour, because you just have one way to do (pico Ariero to pico Ruivo) and not the round trip in case you came with your own vehicle. And also the guide gives you information about history, flora and fauna, that's very instructive. I will do it again if I come back !!

Arieiro Peak, Nun´s Valley & Santo da Serra in 4x4 Half day Tour
The tour was amazing, we were very lucky to have Rui with us as a guide for the second time in our Madeira adventure. Rui is an excellent guide, knowledgeable and kind. His enthusiasm toward the beautiful island of Madeira is inspiring. He helped our ‘city kids’ feels apart of nature! It was awesome!

Sunrise Transfer To Pico Do Arieiro, Hike To Pico Ruivo & Return From Teixeira
One of the most amazing experiences from start to finish. Communication from Elisabeth was excellent and I cannot recommend Filipe highly enough. I was slightly nervous as this was my first solo hike but was put completely at ease by the friendly and professional transfer, as well as Filipe talking us all through the map. Quiet route due to the time and a sunrise I won’t forget.

A Wild Ride on the Monte Toboggan Run

For a one-of-a-kind Madeiran experience, hop on a wood-and-wicker sled for a thrilling ride—down paved streets, not pristine snow. Take the cable car from the capital Funchal up to the town of Monte and then step on board a sled (carro de cesto) for a quick zip back down the steep streets. Two experienced drivers ride behind the sled to steer you safely down the hill while you enjoy the ride.
