The Basics

In the Valley of the Nuns (Curral das Freiras), chestnut grows in abundance and is used to make local produce. Terraced vineyards and cherry orchards populate the lower slopes above the valley, and colorful houses dot the surrounding landscapes.

Half-day tours from Funchal typically combine time in the valley with stops at the Eira do Serrado viewpoint, the valley floor, and Câmara de Lobos fishing village, where you’ll likely sample the Madeiran specialty of Poncha. Full-day excursions might also include a visit to the top of Arieiro Peak.

Stunning views, great afternoon out and well worth the money. Highly recommended. Hugo was a great guide and the mini bus was brand new. Weather was hot and sunny only needed shorts and t-shirt.( Same weather as Funchal ).

An efficient way to see the valley of the nuns and the fishing village

Madeira Valley of the Nuns Tour
It’s a perfect tour if you don’t have a car and want to see the valley of the nuns. It’s not an educational tour but more about a minivan with a good driver on treacherous roads that gets you to three places, gives you 30 minutes in each and you move on. The driver did give very good instructions on how best to maximize 30 minutes in each place.

Madeira Valley of the Nuns Tour
A fun and easy-going tour in a small group with a welcoming guide. It’s worth going just for the view of the Nuns Valley from Eira do Serrado, to which photos really can’t do justice.

Top Day Trips from Funchal

Funchal makes a popular base for exploring the island of Madeira. Natural wonders abound in the west, home to Cabo Girão, one of Europe’s highest capes, and the UNESCO-listed Laurissilva Laurel Forest. This island is known for its wine production, so wine tours through the vineyards along the coast are always a popular option, while catamaran tours and boat trips show off the coast and increase your chance of spotting whales and dolphins.
