The Basics

Mt. Vesuvius is easily seen from below, but a trip to the volcano itself provides the best understanding of the area and its impact on the region’s history. A hike up the mountain begins in Mount Vesuvius National Park, which has nine nature trails and allows for summit access. The crater’s lunar landscape is otherworldly, and the views are tough to beat. Many visitors combine a visit to the area with a stop in the scenic seaside town of Sorrento.

Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples all inclusive
The guide explain a lot about Pompei. The driver drive safety and on time. The van was large, new and confortable. The pizza included was very good. The Vesuvio visit is alone but the place explains itself.

Skip The Line Pompeii Guided Tour & Mt. Vesuvius Volcano from Sorrento
I booked three excursions from Sorrento through Viator and I think this one was the best value. Our guide Roberta was incredibly knowledgeable and kind and really took the time to make everyone feel loved. I will say that the hike up Vesuvius is no joke and you should definitely have a coat and sneakers. I’d definitely recommend this tour, and Roberta in particular!

Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples all inclusive
We loved our day and having a tour guide made Pompeii much more fun and informative. You do not have time to see all main parts of Pompeii but it was enough. Vesuvius was a climb but worth it for views and seeing the steam rise from the crater! Unlike in other reviews there was no hanging around and a good pizza lunch.

Day Trip to Pompeii Ruins & Mt. Vesuvius Volcano from Naples
Vincenzo was the best guide! He knew the answer to any questions we had. He made sure we all enjoyed every part of the tour and I would highly recommend booking through them again! It was beautiful to walk through the ancient city of Pompeii. Following that we were able to walk around the crater of Vesuvio. The view was spectacular!

Amazing Tour of Vesuvio

Mt. Vesuvius (Tour + Transfer)
Excellent tour all round. Our tour guide was amazing and very helpful. Loved the vintage classic van that we were picked up in also! We were a family of 5 and had a very enjoyable day. They take you to the very last stop up Vesuvious, so there is less hiking involved - unlike others that drop you further down the slope.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Mt. Vesuvius is ideal for both outdoor lovers and history buffs.

  • Hiking is best suited for clear days when you can enjoy the views.

  • If you plan to hike, wear comfortable walking shoes. The paths are often dusty and rocky, so closed-toe shoes are best.

  • You can walk to the edge of the crater only with a certified guide.

Mount Vesuvius National Park is easily accessible from Naples via the Circumvesuviana train. The nearest stop is Ercolano, and from there the Busvia del Vesuvio takes you up the mountain. There’s also a local bus that runs from Pompeii. Alternatively, you can book a private or guided tour, which provides transportation, crater access, and insight into the history and details of ancient life in the area.

When to Get There

Though Mt. Vesuvius is visitable open year-round, the best time to go is in the off-season, October to April. Crowds and temperatures both rise during summer. Spring and early fall provide the best times to avoid the area’s potential fog.

The Eruption That Changed History

It’s impossible to understand the impact that Mt. Vesuvius had on Italy—and the world—without a visit to the nearby archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Though many people tragically died in the volcanic eruption, their homes and ways of life remain largely intact in one of the world’s best-preserved ancient sites.
