Gandhi Smriti Tours and Activities
7 Reviews

Gandhi Smriti is a memorial and museum located where Gandhi spent the last few months of his life, before his assassination in January 1948. The spot where the Mahatma was killed is nearby and is marked by a small memorial, while related artifacts and ephemera are housed inside, including Gandhi's glasses and walking stick.
The Basics
Gandhi Smirti is situated in the former home of the Birla family, a prominent business family responsible for building numerous temples across the country. The Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum is situated upstairs and features audiovisual materials and exhibits focusing on Gandhi and his life, including a mix of computer-generated images and actual artifacts. The complex is frequently visited on Delhi city tours, along with tours focused on Gandhi.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Gandhi Smirti is a must for those with an interest in history and social justice.
- Special exhibits for kids make this a good choice for families.
- Still photography is permitted in the museum.
How to Get There
Gandhi Smirti is located in leafy central Delhi, one of the most walkable parts of town. It's a 10-minute walk from the Lok Kalyan Marg metro station on the Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro and a 10-minute walk from the Lodhi Gardens. The area is easily accessible by taxi or auto-rickshaw.
When to Get There
Gandhi Smirti is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday through Sunday. It is closed on most public holidays and on the second Saturday of every month. It's best visited on weekdays when there are smaller crowds. If you can, plan your visit for the middle of the day, as there’s a multimedia show held daily from 1pm to 1:30pm.
Other Gandhi-Related Sites in Delhi
Delhi is home to a number of attractions related to Mahatma Gandhi. These include Raj Ghat, a large memorial park on the banks of the Yamuna River where the freedom fighter was cremated. Just across the street, the National Gandhi Museum features all sorts of memorabilia and educational displays dedicated to Gandhi's life and mission.
