The basics

With its proximity to Palm Springs and Palm Desert, Indian Canyons is easy to visit in a day and still have time for other activities. If you’re interested in exploring with a guide, book a hiking tour to gain insight into the native vegetation and the history and culture of the Cahuilla Indians.   The trails vary from easy to strenuous and feature waterfalls, rock formations, and views of the desert landscape. The 15-mile (24-kilometer) Palm Canyon has a Trading Post where you can pick up hiking maps and American Indian books, art, and other items. Murray Canyon is the least visited, located south of Andreas Canyon. Popular trails include Andreas, which is considered easy; Victor, Dry Wash, and West Fork, which are moderate; and Indian Potrero, which is strenuous.

Worth every penny!
Ben was a fantastic tour guide. He showed us some lovely homes in Palm Springs and was a wonderful cheerleader as we braved the final incline into Indian Canyon. Incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, he made an extra effort to answer all my 15-year-old daughter’s questions about every species of animal in the desert! He even gave some additional recommendations for the other days of our trip. This tour was worth every penny, and be sure to generously tip your guide!

Ben led us on a bike tour through architecturally interesting neighborhoods then into the foothills. He is very knowledgeable about plants, animals, and the area in general. We enjoyed spending our morning with him. Beautiful scenery and pleasant guy!

Indian Canyons Walking Tour by Jeep from Palm Springs
My husband and I toured the Andreas and Palm Canyons as guests of Darrell “Blackfeather.” Darrell was good-natured and very informative regarding native culture, botany and geological history. He showed us how to make rope with Washingtonia filifera fibers, introduced us to the sweet Rosy Constrictor and made sure we were fed, watered and comfortable. It was a fun trip and I was sorry to see it end.

Tahquitz Canyon

Also part of the tribal lands, Tahquitz Canyon is known for its rock art and 60-foot (18-meter) waterfall located at the end of a hiking trail. Closer to Palm Springs, the canyon is popular with those looking for an outdoor activity without having to leave town.
