Pinkas Synagogue (Pinkasova Synagoga) and Old Jewish Cemetery (Starý Zidovský Hrbitov) Tours

Pinkas Synagogue (Pinkasova Synagoga) and Old Jewish Cemetery (Starý Zidovský Hrbitov)
There are dozens of places to honor fallen Jews in the city of Prague, but few are as iconic—or as striking—as the Pinkas Synagogue (Pinkasova Synagoga) and nearby Old Jewish Cemetery (Starý Zidovský Hrbitov). Travelers who enter into the dark doors of Pinkas will find walls inscribed with the more than 77,000 Jews who were killed during the Holocaust, a stunning representation of the atrocity on a visual scale. At the front of the structure a list of concentration camps where men and women perished is listed and the Synagogue’s second floor showcases a small exhibit of moving children’s art.

The nearby burial site serves as the final resting place for some 20,000 Jews. Travelers can wander the well-worn path through 12 layers of graves that belong to famous rabbis, poets and scholars. Off-kilter stones worn by decades of weather serves as a reminder of all that was lost and provide a space of quiet contemplation for visitors.

Practical Info

Pinkas Synagogue hours vary depending on the season, so it’s best to check ahead before making a visit. It is closed to visitors on Saturdays and Jewish holidays.
Address: Široká 23/3, 110 00, Prague, Czech Republic

Prague's Jewish Quarter: Meander through its storied streets on an audio walk

Prague's Jewish Quarter: Meander through its storied streets on an audio walk

Let‘s set off on a self-guided audio walking tour through Prague’s fabled Jewish Quarter, one of the oldest centres of Jewish life in the world. I’ve spent half of my life in this lovely city and I’ve always been fascinated by its Jewish heritage. You'll take in some of its most important sites, including the Old Jewish Cemetery, its beautiful synagogues, the Old Town Square, the Town Hall Clock and Franz Kafka Square. We’ll also meet some of the illuminating figures from Prague’s Jewish history. Let me share some insight into the Jewish history of Prague, which spans centuries, architectural styles, personalities and, above all, stories. If you have a deeper interest in Prague’s Jewish sites and are planning on a visit to the Jewish Museum, which allows you to enter the Old Cemetery and the synagogues, then this is the best practical introduction to your visit. But please note that this tour does not include entrance fees to any of the sites along the way.
