Marietas Islands (Islas Marietas)

Marietas Islands, Mexico

The Basics

The islands are a haven for creatures such as dolphins, manta rays, humpback whales, sea turtles, and blue-footed boobies. Boat tours allow you to see the wildlife, but visitors are only allowed to set foot on one area of the government-protected islands, a strip of sand dubbed the Hidden Beach. Snorkeling and scuba diving tours from Sayulita and Puerto Vallarta are the most popular ways to experience the islands and their coral reef, while whale-watching tours also run in winter.

Magical Murrieta Island
The most memorable parts were seeing sea turtles, tropical fishes when snorkeling, a dolphin, learning about their wildlife on the island, and the amazing entertaining tour guide and Captain we had... Eric and Martin.

Marietas Islands Snorkel Tour & Hidden Beach
The trip to the islands and the hidden beach was amazing. Getting to the hidden beach was pretty scary, I’m not going to lie but our guides had our safety in mind the whole time.

Marietas Islands Snorkel Tour & Hidden Beach
Special thanks to Ilessandro and Ever, our 2 wonderful guides. I wish I could remember the boat captain's name. He was excellent as well. The 3 exhibited the finest hospitality, humor, and safety. I wouldn't hesitate to do it all over again. The Hidden Beach segment of the tour was breathtaking--only outdone by the very up-close whale sighting. Compliments to the captain for navigating the boat brilliantly to allow this unforgettable experience!

Marietas Islands Snorkel Cruise from Puerto Vallarta All Inclusive
We did the eco tour because we all don’t know how to swim. It was a fun experience. The best part was learning about el pájaro bobo de patas azules, and that there are other pájaros with yellow and orange legs. That was very interesting to learn about. Also la bufadora was very interesting too. And the whole crew on the boat was amazing and the food was delicious.

All-Inclusive Full-Day Marietas Islands Boat Tour
The staff on this boat was amazing. They made the trip so much fun. Each staff member connected with us and took care of every need often anticipating that need. If you’re looking for a fun day, this is the trip. Families, college age kids couples were all having fun at the same time. (Don’t forget to tip them, they work so hard and earn it!)

Marietas Islands Snorkel Tour & Hidden Beach
Snorkeling was good other then the fact that there are many small jellyfish in the water thus we were stung many times. We also visited the hidden beach which was great. What wasn't so great was that only 7 on our boat of 9 were allowed to go to the hidden beach. Not sure how this happens. Seems as though our boat missed the call when it was our turn and thus only got 7 passes.

Marietas Islands: Snorkel Cruise from Puerto Vallarta
We loved it! We do recommend wearing wetsuits during jellyfish season. The water HURT but honestly it isn’t bad. The boys who were leading us were the best, they’re sweethearts and I had a great time watching them dance and perfom. Plus the drinks were strong and they knew how to have a great time. If you’re young and ready to have a good time, ask for group 4 and try to sit at the front of the boat if you don’t get seasick.

Highly highly recommend this tour! I mean that this tour company itself must be great. We had a wonderful time with the clues for 7 hrs. They really work so hard to entertain during the tour. So impressed their work!

 Tour marietas islands
Joanna was such an incredible tour guide. We learned about the Islands, but also about the region. She was so curious and interested in the spaces, we felt her enthusiasm and it added to our experience :)

Conservation in the Marietas Islands

The Marietas Islands are an MAB Biosphere Reserve, meaning they are part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere program to improve the relationship between humans and the environment. Because the islands have become increasingly popular, causing interference and possible damage to the ecosystem, the Mexican government authority known as the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) has closed the islands to the public in the past. Efforts may be made to prevent future damage in a variety of ways, so enjoy visiting while you can and keep in mind the fragile nature of this important ecological environment.
