Sitting on a mountain cliff overlooking the Arges River, the Poenari Castle (Cetatea Poenari) is best known for its connection to Vlad the Impaler, said to be the inspiration for the fictional Dracula. Now partially in ruins, the castle was first built in the 13th century and came under Vlad the Impaler’s control in the 15th century. Legend has it that Vlad’s first wife committed suicide rather than be taken hostage by the Ottoman Turks. She allegedly threw herself off one of the castle walls into the river below, turning the water red. The river is now referred to as the Lady’s River.

The castle was eventually abandoned and an earthquake in the 19th century destroyed the northern section. It sat in ruins until 1970, when the Romanian government decided to open it to tourists, building more than 1400 steps into the rock of the mountain to allow visitors to climb up to the castle. Walkways and handrails have also been installed to allow for easier movement throughout the ruins.

The Real Dracula's Castle and his Princely Court of Targoviste

The Real Dracula's Castle and his Princely Court of Targoviste

star-5
1
Poenari Fortress is a great chance to dig in some centuries-old history, but also a good way to exercise as you have to go up 1,480 stairs. But, don’t worry too much. The fortress is more than worth the effort, and you can always reward yourself with some of the many traditional sweets sold at the foothills. Unfairly associated with the myth of Dracula, Vlad the Impaler most likely never set foot in Bran Castle. Don’t go there to find out more about this legendary prince, choose instead the fortress of Poenari that he actually built and used during his battles. The dam was built in 1965 on the Arges river. This was the first valley arch dam in the country. It is a 166.60 m high, and 305m long. Its base thickness is 25m, the top is 6m thick. The Princely Court of Targoviste was conceived as a complex of edifices serving both as a center of the country’s administration and a home for the Wallachian ruler, his family and for the numerous courtiers and ministers.
