Rome is a bucket-list worthy destination for any traveling foodie. And while every visitor to the Italian capital should dine al fresco at a trattorie, the food experiences in Rome go far beyond the restaurant table. Here are your options.

Food-Centric Walking Tours
One of the best ways to experience the breadth of Rome's food culture is to sample the city’s best offerings on a food tour. Each neighborhood has its own signature flavors, from the pizza bianca and fresh mozzarella of Trastevere to the suppli and fried artichokes of the Jewish Ghetto. These tours are an excellent way to get off the tourist path and eat like a local. Those pressed for time can take a walking or biking tour that hits both the cultural and culinary highlights.

Italian Cooking Classes
Sign up for an Italian cooking class and you'll bring home the ultimate souvenir—the ability to recreate the flavors of Rome at home. Learn the secrets of making handmade Italian pasta in the home of a local chef or master pizza-making in a Roman restaurant kitchen. Cooking classes can be combined with a city tour, and there are even classes geared toward kids. Sweet tooth? Try your hand at making tiramisu or fresh gelato.

Dinner Experiences
Rome's landmarks set the perfect stage for a dinner to remember. Enjoy a rooftop meal overlooking ancient ruins; dine in a private cellar near the Pantheon; or feast in the Pinecone Courtyard of the Vatican Museums. Other interesting options include dinner served in the garden of a 17th-century villa; an organic Italian-style picnic in the Borghese or Villa Pamphili gardens; and a historian-led dining experience that takes you back 2,000 years to sample the foods Julius Caesar once ate.

* A traveler said: "Rob and Federica were amazing! They were very professional, and funny with amazing service. When we got the confirmation email from Viator, it said that class starts at 4:15PM and to meet in front of the stairways at Piazza Trilussa but we were supposed to meet the group there at 4PM which was not in the email instruction provided. However, Federica was nice enough to come back out from the restaurant where we were supposed to have our class and led us to class. They let us join the class in session which was really nice of them. We were greeted with Prosecco and an appetizer. Then we started with making Fettucine, the sauce, and then gelato. Rob was the lead chef instructor and he was super knowledgeable, professional and funny. We had an amazing time there and would recommend this to anyone. We cooked in the open space at the back of this super cute restaurant then headed in to eat. The entire restaurant was closed for the class and dinner, super private and intimate."
