The Basics

If your ideal vacation involves hiking or hot springs, Arenal is sure to please. Take a guided hike through the lush rain forest to learn about native wildlife, wade beneath Arenal Waterfall, or soak in Baldi Hot Springs. Although much of the park is open to the public, some portions of the volcano are accessible only as part of a guided tour. And even though the volcano itself is large, hiking is limited to the basal portions for safety reasons, as the volcano still sputters and spews on occasion. The park and surrounding areas are rich in lava-less activities: Combo tours help you make the most of your visit to the Arenal area, pairing a trip to the volcano with nearby attractions such as La Fortuna Hot Springs, Venado Caves, Lake Arenal, and the Peñas Blancas River for activities including zipline and hanging bridge canopy tours, waterfalls and hot springs visits, horseback riding, rappelling, safari floats, and whitewater rafting.

ATV Guided Experience in La Fortuna, Arenal Volcano.
So much fun! The guys were all so friendly and awesome. My 8 year old daughter and I had a blast! Felt very safe and in control the whole time. Took us on different terrains which was cool. We did the shorter version but I kind of wish we did the longer one! ATVs are so fun!

Full day Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall and Hotsprings
Anthony, our tour guide, was amazing! He was very knowledgeable and kind and fun! He was also very patient with me as I struggled on the way up from the waterfall. This portion of the day is very strenuous, but worth it! It was an amazing adventure and my husband and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see and learn about the beautiful Costa Rica land and people.

The tour was amazing. From the moment we met with our tour guide till the moment we got dropped off at our hotel. The waterfall was an amazing experience and so was the hike to the arenal volcano. We had great food and a very informational tour. Our tour guide Eddie/Eric now sure how it’s spelled was super enthusiastic about his job made the experience one for the books. Definitely bring water shoes and sneakers.

Full day Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall and Hotsprings
We had an amazing time on this tour. We were able to hike to the arenal falls, arenal volcano, and hot springs all in one day. We were also able to meet some native Costa Ricans and learn their culture as well as see wildlife along the way. Our guide was great at teaching about wildlife and plants as well as history. I was able to do this with my seven and nine year old.

Tabacon Resort Hot Springs and Hiking in Arenal Volcano from San José.
Juan José (our driver) and Jordan (our guide) are INCREDIBLE PEOPLE. We had an amazing time with them and they were the best we had during our stay in Costa Rica! THANK YOU BOTH! ☆☆☆☆☆ This tour is amazing, full of wonderful experiences and memories for a lifetime! Nature and adventure, great food and a relaxing time at the Tabacon hot springs. A quick tip for the company regarding the time spent at Tabacon: please make sure that the 3 hours are fully respected, as it is a very important part of this trip. We had only about 2 hours and 15 min to enjoy the springs and we would have loved to get the whole 3 hour experience! All in all, a 5☆ tour. Thank you Juan José and Jordan, thank you A y E Travel!

Full day Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall and Hotsprings
It was a great experience allowing us to see such beautiful parts of La Fortuna Arenal. The hike to the waterfall is pretty tedious but the views make it well worth it. Bring water shoes. Lunch was good and then going to the volcano was spectacular, it’s such a beautiful area. Lastly the hot springs were the perfect way to end the day. Carlos was a very knowledgeable tour guide and made the day super fun.

How to Get There

Many guided tours depart from La Fortuna, the closest city to Arenal Volcano National Park—about 30 minutes away by car. Day tours from larger cities such as San Jose, Liberia, and Monteverde are best accomplished with a private car, taxi, or professional shuttle service, which keep travel times down to roughly three hours from each. Those looking for more budget-friendly options can take the public bus, but be prepared for a long trip; save travel time by checking for direct routes when possible.

When to Get There

The dry season (March to December) is generally considered the best time to view and explore Arenal; however, that is also Costa Rica’s high tourist season, so expect crowds and higher prices. Travel during the rainy season is better for budget travelers or those seeking a quieter experience.

Arenal Volcano Eruption History

After nearly 400 dormant years, Arenal Volcano exploded in 1968, burying three villages and wreaking destruction in the area. This eruption ushered in Arenal’s active period, which produced near-constant ash, smoke, and streams of molten lava until its abrupt stop in 2010. The volcano is now considered resting.
