Maddalena Archipelago (Arcipelago della Maddalena)

Via Giulio Cesare 7, La Maddalena, Sardinia, 07024

The Basics

For decades, the Maddalena Archipelago was spared from the ravages of intensive tourism, because its largest island was a NATO base. When the base closed in 2008, Sardinia’s “yachterati” began visiting the islands, but their national park status has protected the ecosystem from unchecked development. Today, the islands retain an almost undiscovered feel, and many of the beaches are accessible only by boat. Most of the archipelago’s residents live in La Maddalena on the main island, but venture out of town a few minutes by land or sea, and you’ll feel like you have the islands to yourself.

A popular destination for divers and beach enthusiasts, the Maddalena Archipelago can only be reached from Sardinia by ferry or private boat. Join a boat tour to skip the crowded port town, and explore the coastlines and beaches farther afield. Or, opt for a scuba or snorkeling excursion.

Sailboat tour from PALAU to the Maddalena Archipelago.
Had a wonderful tour. The crew was very attentive and friendly. We saw beautiful beaches before the busy period started, so it was nice and calm. The food was delicious and the group was small and cozy. Overall had a great time :)

Sailboat tour from PALAU to the Maddalena Archipelago.
Captain and crew were very attentive to our needs and safety during the trip. They kept a close eye on us when we were swimming in the water and served us lots of local food including sausage, cheese, wine (white, sweet red, prosecco, etc.), Sardinian cheesecake. Recommend this experience for anyone who visits here the first time!

Sailing boat tour in the Maddalena Archipelago
One great experience can make a trip. It creates memories which will last a lifetime and provides stories to tell for years to come. This was the case aboard boat with Inna and Juriy. Excellent hosts, they truly delivered a day we would not have traded for anything. From the food, to the drink, to the company - all was exemplary. We felt right at home with them and had an amazing day exploring the maddalena archipelago. The day began with a meet and greet at a lovely little cafe in town. From there, Juriy ferried us to their beautiful boat docked just off shore and our time on the water began. We visited locations where we could swim and paddle board. We anchored to explore a beautiful pink sand beach and had a short hike. We even met a friendly pig on one island stop! What a day. It’s impossible to encapsulate our experience in words but sufficed to say, we’d do it all again in a heartbeat. Thank you, Inna and Juriy, for sharing your boat with us and providing a day we will remember fondly. We could not recommend your trip more.

Catamaran tour to the Maddalena Archipelago from Cannigione
Thank you for this fanstastic trip! Organisation, Information and boat crew where very helpful and supportive. We travel with a 8 month old baby and we felt very comfortable on the boat and the company. Provided lunch and dinner was very good and I guess typical for Sardinia. Only room for improvement is to offer some drinks beside lunch and dinner. Other than that we would book this tour 100% again and the catamaran tenere! Thanks

Sailing boat tour in the Maddalena Archipelago
We had a great time on the boat. Inna and Youri worked hard to give everybody a great time on board of the boat. Nice lunch, enough drinks and appetizers. They know the best places to visit and to swim. Youri and a Inna are sailors with lots of experience so even with tough wind they know what to do. Thank you Inna and Youri.

Afternoon excursion (15: 00/19: 00) by rubber boat in the archipelago of La Maddalena.
This tour was the best part of our holiday. The amazing blue colors of the Archipel together with the professional guidance of Stefano made it a fantastic excursion

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Passengers must be agile enough to board and disembark from a boat—confirm accessibility if you have limited mobility.

  • The main port town of La Maddalena has several eateries, and there are a few waterfront restaurants scattered along the coastline that are accessible only by boat.

How to Get There

The Maddalena Archipelago lies in the Strait of Bonifacio between Sardinia and Corsica, about 20 minutes from Sardinia’s port city of Palau. You can get to the islands by ferry or via a private boat tour from a number of ports along the Sardinian coast.

When to Get There

The archipelago is most crowded in summer, when Italians head for its relatively remote beaches. Go in late spring or early fall for fewer people and warm temperatures perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

The Seven Islands of the Maddalena Archipelago

The largest island—and the archipelago’s main port and town—is La Maddalena, with a permanent population of just under 10,000 people. The nearby islands of Caprera and Santo Stefano are also inhabited, though there are no towns or ports on these largely wild expanses of coast and countryside. Spargi, Santa Maria, Budelli, and Razzoli are smaller, deserted islands, known for their pristine coastlines and rich marine life.
