Gregory of Nin (Grgur Ninski) Tours

Gregory of Nin (Grgur Ninski)
Ivan Meštrović’s iconic Gregory of Nin (Grgur Ninski) statue is one of Split’s most popular attractions. Originally erected in 1929, the 27-foot (8.5-meter) sculpture commemorates the medieval bishop and advocate of Croatia’s national language. Today, his bronze toe has been rubbed clean by countless visitors seeking good luck.

The Basics
As one of the city’s major landmarks, the statue is included on most city tours, which come in many forms. A close encounter with his shiny toe is a must; walking tours offer visitors a hands-on experience, while combo packages include activities such as wine tasting. Taking a tour with a local guide means that you’ll benefit from insider knowledge, while evening tours allow you to explore when crowds have dispersed and temperatures have cooled.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • The iconic statue is a must-see (and rub) for first-time visitors to Split.
  • The public statue is free to view and photograph.
  • Wheelchair users can access the statue via the flat walkway on Ulica Kralja Tomislava, though be aware of the steep steps leading up to the sculpture.
  • Like many of Split’s landmarks, the Gregory of Nin statue is uncovered, so it’s worth packing a light waterproof just in case of showers.

How to Get There
The centrally-located landmark is easily accessible on foot from anywhere in downtown Split. The area is served by several local buses, including 3,5,6,and 11, and hop-on hop-off buses, which allow you to travel between all major Split attractions at your own pace.

When to Get There
Visit the statue early in the morning or during the late afternoon to avoid the largest crowds of toe-rubbers. Alternatively, stroll by after dark to see the statue illuminated against the atmospheric backdrop of the Old Town.

The History of Gregory of Nin
In the 10th century, Christian services were delivered in Latin, under the direct order of the Pope. Bishop Gregory, from Nin, was a royal chancellor who directly objected to this order, believing that people needed to understand the liturgy and had to right to worship in their native language. Though he eventually lost his position due to his views, and it took a further 644 years for the cause to succeed, he is now considered a champion of Slavic languages and a national hero.
Address: Ul. kralja Tomislava 12, Split 21000, Croatia

Guided Historical Walking Tour of Split

Guided Historical Walking Tour of Split

star-5
This is a walking tour of Split with a local historian! I will guide you through all of the relevant sites in the center of Split in a logical manner following the cities development through time. That covers all of Split's history from ancient Roman times till today. I have a Master's degree in history and I can tell you so much more about history. By that, I don't mean only about the history of Split. I can tell you anything you want to know about Croatia in general since I always welcome and encourage questions! I worked as a history teacher so I try and use all of the teaching skills I earned through education and practice. Interaction and dialogue are very important during my tour! Also, I am a local from Split, I've been living here for my whole life. I try to use multi-media as much as possible so I carry a tablet with me which I use to demonstrate a lot of things I am mentioning. The tablet also has a free Wi-Fi hotspot on it for my group!

2 Hours Split Walking tour with free food tasting

On this tour we aim not only to acquaint our guests with the historical background of Split, but also to make a lasting impression of the destination. We wish to immerse them in local way of life and give them an authentic experience they won't soon forget. We can achieve that by telling them stories about everyday life in Split, incorporating lesser-known tidbits or talking about cultural quirks. However, we also think it is important to engage all of the guests' senses, which is why we included places like Split's Green market, a chocolate store, Vestibule (with a cappella group usually present), Matejuška pier (where locals socialize).
