Day Excursion to Uthina Zaghouan and Thuburbo Majus from Tunis or Hammamet

Day Excursion to Uthina Zaghouan and Thuburbo Majus from Tunis or Hammamet

star-5
1
From Tunis, the road runs alongside a partially restored Roman aqueduct, reminding that Tunis, since ancient times, has been drinking spring water from the mountain of Zaghouan. Along the way, fans of archeology will appreciate the site of Oudna, a Punic city that has become Roman. The so-called “Laberii” villa with its thirty rooms on 2,300 mÂČ deserves a special visit for its mosaics, an archaeological site well preserved includes an astonishing amphitheater that could once accommodate 20,000 spectators. Then we will visit the Andalusian medina of Zaghouan, to finish with Thuburbo Majus, an ancient city that experienced a decline in the middle of the third century before a brilliant renaissance in the fourth century, leading it to proclaim itself Respublica Felix Thuburbo Majus. The vandal invasion, in the middle of the fifth century, put an end to the prosperity of the city and brought it back to the rank of a town which soon after the Arab conquest was deserted.

Archaelogical Site Of Carthage + Picturesque Village Of Sidi Bou Said

Archaelogical Site Of Carthage + Picturesque Village Of Sidi Bou Said

star-5
4
Departure to Carthage, founded by the Phoenicians in 814 BC. The earliest settlements of Punic Carthage can sill be seen on Byrsa Hill, just below the renowed Carthage National Museum. Although destroyed by the Romans in 146BC and later built over by them, recent excavation has revealed the foundations of five-story Punic houses, each with its own cistern and drainage system. The most remarkable early remains are the two basins of the Punic Ports, an evidence of the Carthaginian’ mastery of the sea, which fascinated and frustrated the Romans. Another important site of pre-roman Carthage is the Tophet. Sidi Bou said: Perched high atop of a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean, this picturesque village is a delightful place for a leisurely stroll through winding cobbled streets. Its trademark white walls, contrasting sky blue doors and ornate window grids, make for a wonderfully inspiring setting. Wander around the boutiques for souvenirs or relax at a cliff-side Moorish cafĂ©.

DOUGGA & TESTOUR full day including local Lunch

DOUGGA & TESTOUR full day including local Lunch

This beautiful mosque has a distinctive octagonal minaret and is one of the earliest examples decorated with tiles in Tunisia. The sundial clock on the south face would be standard on any church bell tower in Spain but doesn’t appear on a minaret anywhere else in the world. Testour’s Andalusian heritage is preserved in many small details such as houses covered in beautiful curved ceramic roof tiles similar to those found in many regions of Spain. Habiba M’sika’s house: This famous Jewish singer lived and died tragically at the hands of her lover in Testour. Dougga the best preserved Roman site in Tunisia.

Dougga : The most intact site of North Africa

Dougga : The most intact site of North Africa

Dougga is situated in the mountains inland of Tunisia (1h30 from Tunis)in an area that was densely populated by the Numidians. The city served as one of the capitals of Massinissa, a Roman ally, and one of the contenders to Carthage. It is a visit to a huge archaeological site of about 3 kmÂČ, the most intact Roman city in North Africa. The beautiful theatre at Dougga dates back to 168 CE and was donated to the city by one of its wealthiest families. Its condition is so good that it used for the concerts at the Dougga Festival in summer. The Capitol of Dougga must be one of the most impressive remains from the Roman era. It is fascinating to see a brothel built so pragmatically and bluntly to service its function: An open court for courting, and rooms immediately in for the services. The Licinian Baths are quite interesting for having much of its original walls intact, as well as a long tunnel used by the slaves working at the baths. NB: Transport can be arranged upon demand
