The Basics

The Palace of Doges is a significant historical site in Venice, with many travelers arriving to hear about the strict rule of the Venice Doges from an expert local guide. The site is most often visited on a two- to five-hour Venice tour and can be combined with a stop at St Mark's Basilica, once the private chapel of the Doges. Inside the palace, admire the many paintings by Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese, and climb the narrow staircases to visit the Doge's apartments and the prison cells, as well as the ducal notary. Outside the palace is the Bridge of Sighs and the beautiful columns along the piazzetta.

The popular Secret Itineraries tour allow visitors, accompanied by a guide, into chambers of the palace not open to the general public. You'll see the secret chancellery where the delicate work of governing was done, the secret archives, the torture room, and the cell from which the famous writer Giacomo Casanova made his escape.

Far exceeded expectations!
Amazing is not an exaggeration. The palace and basilica were stunning. But the guide Susan truly exceeded her responsibilities and …due to unique circumstances of off-season and Covid reduced crowds…was able to give us a real behind the scenes look at the cathedral. She is a wealth of knowledge and actively thought about how to make our tour more special. And boy did it work.

Skip the Line: Doge's Palace Ticket & Guide Book
It is as initially confusing but we did find the kiosk as stated. Due to Covid, we still waited in line but it was stemless once admitted. Excellent interiors though my art historian husband thought that Ca’ Rezenico has better art.

Legendary Venice St. Mark's Basilica with Terrace Access & Doge's Palace
Our guide, Pamela, was extremely knowledgeable about Venice’s history and pointed out some very interesting features of the city’s history as well as the two buildings we toured in detail. But Piazza San Marco was flooded at the start of the tour by high water in the canals, and my traveling party had to deal with a cold rain as we walked around in the evening. That took away from our experience, but the tour guide Pamela was terrific.

Venice Walking Tour plus Skip the Lines Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tours
The four hour walking tour of Venice was terrific. The four hours were split pretty evenly between sites of Venice near St. Mark’s square and the “Basilica and Doge Palace”. We had separate guides for each of the two pats and each guide was excellent. They were knowledgable, courteous, humorous and interesting in what they shared about what we saw. If your going to Venice, the four hour walking tour is a must!

Legendary Venice St. Mark's Basilica with Terrace Access & Doge's Palace
Our guide (Sara) was awesome! Took care of the group, and gave good information without going into too much detail. She kept our teenagers engaged throughout the tour - something no other guide has been able to do. The Cathedral is beautiful, but the Doges Palace was what was unexpected. The place was amazing and we were surprised how little attention this palace gets. It needs to be seen to be believed. This was a tour worth the price.

Venice Walking Tour plus Skip the Lines Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tours
We were on a one day visit to Venice and this tour was very good for seeing highlights and experiencing some of the history during the walk. The walk of the tour was longer than I expected but very interesting thanks to our excellent tour guide Emmanuela. She shared interesting history and answered many of our questions. We did not do the gondola ride. Recommended tour!

St Mark's Basilica After-Hours Small Group Tour with Optional Doge's Palace
This was an interesting tour. We really enjoyed our guide but it did seem like her company didn’t provide the proper equipment. There weren’t enough headsets for everyone in the group. Otherwise, she presented all the information very well and the church itself was pretty great.

Venice Semi-Private Tour of Doge's Palace and Saint Mark's | with Private Option
My husband and I were reluctant to travel because of the pandemic which made a small group max 6 persons very attractive to us. We turned out to be the only ones in the tour but LivTours didn't cancel which I thought was great! Marie-therese was absolutely wonderful. Her breadth of knowledge was amazing and her pleasant demeanor made the time fly by. We got to see everything that we wanted to without rushing or stress. Highly recommend this company and of course our guide.

A Haunting History

Death sentences were declared between the 9th and 10th columns outside the palace, while executions were carried out between the freestanding columns in the piazzetta next to the lagoon; even today Venetians won't walk between them. A final chance at life was offered if the accused were able to walk around the edge of the third column on the seaward side of the palace.
