The Basics

The Rialto is one of the most famous landmark bridges in Europe, and a popular and crowded Venice attraction connecting the San Marco district, home of St. Mark's Square, to the San Polo district, where Venice's famous fish market has stood for 700 years. The bridge is visited on nearly every walking tour through the "Floating City," along with other historic tourist attractions like the nearby Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale), Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri), and St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco). For a unique view of the bridge far from the crowds, consider booking a Venice gondola ride or Venice Grand Canal evening boat tour to see the bridge from the water.

A neat little orientation of the back...
A neat little orientation of the back streets of Venice. Not only was our fabulous guide full of knowledge of the sights, but happy to recommend the best places for exploring on our own. This was our 5th Viator walking tour, and couldn't fault any of them.

Rialto Farmers Market Food Tour in Venice with Wine Tasting & Guided Sightseeing
Silvia was a fun and energetic guide as we navigated through Venice, eating and drinking at the oldest bacaras and hearing the stories. The food was very good and the wines even better. It was our favorite tour of the trip! Thank you Silvia!

Great walking tour of many areas of Venice

Private Tour: Venice Rialto Market, San Polo and Frari Church Walking Tour
Barbara gave my friend and me a terrific tour that covered many areas of Venice, not just Rialto, San Polo, and I Frari. Because there were only two of us on the tour, it was tailored to us. Barbara knows Venice inside-out and was easily able to answer all our questions. Just to note: tour guides in Venice who provide outside tours are not permitted to provide inside tours. Therefore, this tour did not provide detailed information on the inside of i Frari. This is not a criticism of Barbara; it’s just how it apparently works here in Venice.

Rialto Market Food and Wine Lunchtime Tour of Venice
The guide was knowledgeable and easy to understand. She really tried to give us a taste and feel of Venice. Some of the food was not to our taste, but the places were friendly and clean and provided us with comfortable accomodations. The pace was easy for us senior citizens.

Tasty Rialto Farmers Market Food Tour in Venice with Wine Tasting & Sightseeing
We found this wine and food tour to be a great way to get in the trenches and experience a cross section of foods and wine. Ana, our guide, was the perfect combination of fun and energy to take us around. The portions were generous and the wine was plentiful. All locations were within easy walking distance. It went by quickly and we left with a great memory.

Venice Food Tour Including Rialto Market and Cicchetti
A thoughtful overview of the Rialto Market and the Cecchetti shops around it. Kristina was our guide and she was passionate but easy to understand. We left with full bellies and smiles on our faces.

Worth every penny! This tour exceeded expectations! Very relaxed, small groups and you get some history off the beaten track and get to see what the locals experience. Sylvia was amazing and her recommendations for food and wine were spot on. You really do get what you pay for and I would recommend this tour to everyone visiting Venice!

If you want to see local Venice, away...

Semi-Private Secret Venice with Rialto market & Food and Wine Tour
If you want to see local Venice, away from the touristy mobs, then this is the tour to take. My boyfriend and I had been to Venice several times before this tour, and we still learned a lot of interesting information that most other tours miss. The tour guide was a local Venetian who even showed us where she lived so that we could understand local life in Venice.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The bridge is lined with tiny shops and leads to the San Polo neighborhood, known for its market and gourmet stores; it’s an ideal spot for souvenir shopping.

  • The Rialto is a pedestrian bridge but has stairs on each side, so it is not accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to Get to There

The Rialto Bridge crosses the Grand Canal between the San Marco and San Polo districts, and can be reached by vaporetto water bus lines 1 and 2 via the Rialto stop. Along Venice's maze of tiny streets, there are signs and arrows painted on the walls at regular intervals pointing toward the Rialto.

When to Get There

The islands of Venice are crowded with tourists during the popular summer months, and it can be a challenge to navigate the crowds on the bridge. Take an early morning or late evening stroll if visiting between April and October, or book a private tour by boat along the Grand Canal.

The Grand Canal Bridges

The Rialto Bridge is one of four bridges that span the Grand Canal. The other three are the wood-and-steel Accademia Bridge (Ponte dell'Accademia), the modern Constitution Bridge (Ponte della Costituzione), and the marble ‘Bridge of the Barefoot’ (Ponte degli Scalzi).
