The Basics

Located at the center of Venice, St. Mark’s Square is the perfect hub around which to plan your walking tour of Venice. It is just steps from the Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale) and its famous Bridge of Sighs, the Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal, and the Riva walk along the waterfront. The piazza is home to a number of palaces and sculptures by the Renaissance sculptor and architect Sansovino, so a private or small-group guided tour is key to fully appreciating its rich Venetian Gothic art and architecture.

Great in-depth explanation of nice highlights of Venice in only a day!
Francesca gave a rich history to all the stops and kept a comfortable pace while seeing so many key parts of Venice. San Marco Basilica was explained perfectly and the walk about Venice was great.

Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola ride
This tour was fantastic thanks to our wonderful guide, Mosè who was sooo knowledgeable and incredibly passionate about Venice and its history. He made the tour very entertaining and interesting, his anecdotes were relevant, and fascinating and gave us a different perspective on Venice and the Venetians back then. We did the tour with our children (14 and 16) who both were as captivated as we were.

Venice in a Day Tour with St Mark's, Doge's Palace and Gondolas
Wonderful full day tour of Venice. Easy to find meeting place in St. Mark's Square. Grace was a wonderful guide! We started our day with skip the line tickets to St. Mark's Basilica followed by a walking tour including the Rialto Bridge. We then boarded our gondola for a memorable ride. We had about 1.5 hours for lunch (on our own, but great suggestions of where to go from Grace). The second half of the day was a tour of Doge's Palace (skip the line tickets) including The Bridge of Sighs.

When to Get There

St. Mark’s Square is an open-air square, so the area is best enjoyed during the milder months of the year. Summer brings the largest crowds to the piazza, but overall, Venice is relatively quiet from November through February.

Flooding at St. Mark’s Square

Venice sits at sea level on the Adriatic, so when tides are especially high during winter, the city is often flooded. St. Mark’s Square is one of the lowest parts of the city center, and when acqua alta, or high water, hits, Venice sets up elevated walkways so locals and visitors can cross the piazza without getting wet.
