Excellent and absolutely worthwhile trip!

We were tossing between taking the train vs going with this company via car - and we’re glad we went with this option! Our guide was Theo, who messaged us the day before re-confirming the pick-up time and was punctually waiting for us at 7.30am. It was a pleasant drive up to Meteora (~4.5 hours) and Theo kept us very entertained - he was great to chat to, gave us a lot of insight into the Greek life which you wouldn’t normally be privy to. The time passed quickly and he was very nice to stop and show us the good photo spots. We went to the small monastery first because it was closing at 1pm, followed by the great Meteora. We had the option of going to a third one but we felt we’d covered off the first 2 well enough and got a good enough view of the third one from the outside! We never felt rushed and it was super relaxing and easy going for us. We stopped by Kalambaka for lunch and found an amazing place for lunch - seemed popular with the locals! The drive back was a bit longer than anticipated due to some unforeseen road closures (floods) but we got some good rest on the way back so it wasn’t tiring at all. It’s a long day for sure, but very much worth it and totally feasible for a day trip! Would recommend this option and this tour company! Thanks for the smooth driving and great chats Theo!

An absolutely wonderful guide- personable, energetic, flexible, and smart. The tour was delightful, and the sights were amazing. Wear good walking shoes and be ready to climb for a couple of the monasteries. It is a must see in Greece, and, given the comfortable car and our guide’s companionship, not a trial to get to. Wonderful suggestion for lunch, as well, with a beautiful view. Thank you!

Spectacular, unique, sacred Meteora

Amazing! Go! Meteora is unique and sacred. Meteoros in Greek meaning floating — and these six monasteries carved high in the rock monoliths feel that way. The views are stupendous and each monastery contains a jewel of a church. I had read how traveling by train connections could be problematic and time consuming. So I decided to go with this private tour and I am so glad I did. We left at 7 and arrived back into Athens at 7. Theofolis picked me up in front of my Airbnb, was on time and geared the tour to my needs—always considering needed breaks. He couldn’t be nicer! Theofolis is one of the owners of this tour company, so he really cares. Highly recommended!

A place not to be missed when you are in Greece

Three words : Mythical, Magical and Mesmerizing. We engaged a one-day private tour with Travelguru through Viator because the train journey is quite troublesome as I was told. The journey was comfortable albeit a little far, four and a half hours one way to be exact. Our driver Mr Dimitri is such a nice guy and we had very good conversation along the way so the whole journey was quite relaxing. Made a number of short stops for toilet visits and to stretch our legs. Visited two monasteries and took tonnes of pictures of the others. Just marveled at the sight of such beautiful buildings and their surroundings. A place surely will not let any visitor down and the effort of making this trip is worth it and a strong recommendation for anyone thinking of going. A superb site worthy of being selected by UNESCO. Should be on every visitor"s bucket list. 10 out of 10.

It was a long drive from Athens but an incredible site. Be ready to do lots of walking up and down stairs. Our driver was excellent and told us a lot of history of Greece and the area during the drive. He was also very handy for pickup after we came back from the monistary

We booked a full day trip to Meteora with a stop at Thermopyle. The experience from start to finish was fantastic! Booking was easy through Viator's website. Our guide was Dimitris (didn't get his last name). He showed up promptly at 8 am in a smaller air-conditioned van (not the typical big tour buses that make for a noisy and less personal experience) and we were his only customers for the day. Let me say that Dimitris represents all that is best in the Greek people-genuine warm hospitality, accommodating our every wish, an absolute gold mine of knowledge about Greek history, modern day culture, politics--basically no question went unanswered. His observations showed also the thoughtful nature of the Greek people--always thinking about why things are the way they are! My husband and I were so amazed and impressed with him!! Regarding the trip..after about 4 hours through fabulous scenery of mountains and lakes, (with a short restroom break) we reached Meteora. Unfortunately the largest monastery was closed that day (all of the 6 may not be open every day), so we went to Varlaam, the 2nd largest, and Roussanou a smaller one. The van took up all the way up to the steps which we had to climb on foot, not a bad climb at all and jaw-dropping vistas all around. Varlaam was built in the mid-14C, well worth the visit. We actually go to see them hauling mortar and sand up about a 1000 meters to the very top using an ancient bucket and pulley system. Nothing like it in the world! The church itself is beautifully decorated with rich paintings and everywhere the views are just stunning! The second monastery was a much smaller one. Dimitris was willing to take us to see another, but after the first one the mind's eye becomes saturated somewhat. He then recommended a restaurant off the touristic traps, which served wonderful Cretan food--plentiful, fresh, and relatively inexpensive. The owners welcomed us like family. We had fried calamari and greek salad for starters, I had the lamb shank slow-baked with herbs and my husband had lamb in feta cheese. Both delicious! Bill with a glass of wine was only about 26 euro! Wish I got the name of it! Then off to Thermopyle the site of epic battle where 300 Spartans led by King Leonides, 700 Thespians and 100 or so slaves held off the might of the Persian empire in about 480BC. They died there! Poignant! We arrived back at about 9.30 pm. Despite running a hour late, Dimitris didn't rush us. Highly recommend the trip!!
