Boasting sacred structures that date back to 1500 BC, Lamanai was once an important trading hub between Belize, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras and is considered one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Mesoamerica. Your expedition begins with morning pickup at your Belize City hotel or the port and a drive north to the Orange Walk District. As you approach the site along the beautiful New River, the ancient temples of Lamanai — which means ‘submerged crocodile’ — rise majestically out of the jungle.

Explore the fascinating archaeological site with a guide, walking among ceremonial pyramids, open-air plazas, the ball court and other remnants of ancient Mayan civilization. Learn about history of Lamanai and the many people who have occupied it for more than three millennia, building new structures on top of old ones to avoid destroying ancestral sites. Admire the impressive scale and stone carvings of highlights like the Jaguar and Mask Temples.

After touring the ruins, take a walk on the wild side through the habitats of local black howler monkeys. Recharge with a fresh buffet lunch of typical Belizean cuisine before relaxing on the return journey to Belize City, where the 6-hour tour concludes with hotel or port drop-off.

Lamanai was awe inspiring. Our guide Hilberto was awesome. Our group of 4 had a dedicated guide for the entire day. He picked us up at the hotel and stayed with us all day. He was very knowledgeable of the history of Belize and Lamanai. Seeing the ruins and learning about the history was the highlight of the day. The Baboon Encounter was good as well. The trails were flooded by the river, but the personnel at the black howler monkey reserve were able to call the monkeys to us. We were able to interact with the howler monkeys up close and personal. The lunch that was provided was really good!

The tour operator, AyinHa, was very accommodating of specific needs we had for pick up and drop off, they were fabulous to work with. The Lamanai site is so awesome and the visit to the sanctuary was absolutely incredible. We got a chance to feed a little one some fruit right from our hands.
