"Jay Robinson is a legend."

Lava tubes and live volcanos. How can you not have a good time baseline? But what made our trip even more special: our Ecotour guide taught us through genuine respect, passion, knowledge, and enthusiasm for the culture and environment around him - delivered with humility and humor. As we were walking back to our car, another tour guide taking another group out exclaimed "Jay Robinson - that man is a legend in this industry." Thank you Jay. It was a great pleasure to meet you.

Jay is the most knowledgeable guide around, having been a ranger in the park for many years.

Jay pointed out dozens of plants unique to the volcano area. Also extremely familiar with the volcano, its eruptions and movements. He brought along a scope so that we could look at the volcanic lava moving around up close. Went through the lava tube, with him pointing out wall spikes which used to hold lanterns, a seismology instrument monitoring cracks changing, vents, etc. The guy is a fount of knowledge, obviously loves the park, and is great fun as well. Best guide we have ever had.

Had an amazing experience at the park! Could not have asked for a better guide with Erik who has impressive knowledge, credentials and a nice person that really made the experience extra special- a private tour is definitely the way to go vs tour bus-type company. A MUST DO!

My son and I both agree that this was by far the best tour we took during our visit to Hawaii (and we did several other cool tours in the clouds and ocean). Jay was our tour guide and he was phenomenal!! He has lived in the area for 30 years so was able to put a personal touch in the tour. He is so passionate and knowledgeable about the area that you couldn’t help but want to learn more. The volcano was steaming during our visit but no lava. That didn’t even matter. We enjoyed learning about the geology of the area, plants/birds, Polynesian and Hawaiian history, Hawaiian language, politics, culture and many super interesting stories of their gods / religion that gave us a totally new appreciation for Volcano National Park as well as Hawaii and it’s people. We explored the crater rim, a lava tube, rainforest plants, the geology in a lava field and even petroglyphs by the seashore. Would absolutely do this again! Would love more time to soak up some of Jay’s knowledge and wisdom :-). Thanks!

This tour is a MUST. We learned more about the volcanoes, the species that grow in the park and the history of the park in three hours from Justin that we could have ever learned on our own or in a larger group. Justin knew right where to go to see the lava flow and the other areas of the park that matched our interests. If you decide to take this tour, ask for Justin. He is an exceptional guide. Exceptional! He knows his stuff but he teaches you in a way that is engaging and truly fun. You cannot go wrong spending three hours in the park with Justin. Do it!

Had a great 3 hour tour with our guide Justin. We didn’t have time to spend the whole day and having Justin as our guide ensured we hit the best highlights of the National Park. Justin was super knowledgeable and informative. We enjoyed his company, learned a lot, and had a wonderful tour. Highly recommend.

Our guide Michelle was awesome. answered about 10,000 questions, and gave great scientific and historic info, along with showing us tons of cool things we might have missed otherwise. We both thought it was excellent. and have already recommended it to others

Comprehensive and interesting

Our tour guide Justin was knowledgable, personable, witty, and fun to be with. It was a longish day but he kept it interesting the entire time. Justin has good knowledge of the geology and how the volcano has changed over time. He knows the plants and animals and has an in depth understanding of the history of the people of Hawaii and it’s political and cultural evolution. I particularly liked lunch on the lava near the ocean, the tree molds on an old lava bed, and walking near the steam vents while discussing Captains Vancouver and Cook. He provided tips for other future sights should we visit again. Super fun tour. Thanks Justin.

Our Guide, John, met us at the the Volcano House and the adventure began there. We hiked our way down the valley and back up all while learning so many interesting facts about the plants in the jungle to the plants growing from the cracks in the lava rock. We hiked and we rested and we made our way out to the crater rim and saw the glowing, spewing lava. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. Thank you John!! Our favorite tree is by far the Ohia Tree and the beautiful red blossom.
