Learn what makes Dubrovnik so special by booking this informative walking tour. Meet your guide just outside Pile Gate. Lead by a knowledgeable local guide, the tour takes in the limestone-paved streets of the city’s Stari Grad (Old Town), and uncovers the real story behind the city’s churches, monasteries and palaces. Walk the 1.2-mile (2-km) walls (entrance fee not included), which were first built in the 12th century, and get a different viewpoint of the city, as the shimmering Adriatic Sea dazzles you from a distance.

As you stroll, get an insider’s view of the history of Dubrovnik, from the 11th century when a sea channel, in what is now Stari Grad, was filled in. Learn also about the landmarks Fort Revelin and Minceta Tower. In the distance, you’ll see Fort Lovrijenac, the only fort that belongs to the city walls but is physically separated from them.

Listen to your guide regale stories from the city’s long and rich history, about how it was an autonomous republic buttressing both the Ottoman and the Venetian Empires. Your tour then finishes near the port.

Walls of Dubrovnik
We will stop to buy the city walls tickets and then we will walk the city walls. Marvel at the beautiful blue colors of the Adriatic Sea and admire breathtaking views of the port and the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while your guide takes you through the history of the city walls. In the 11th century, the sea channel separating the city from mainland was covered up with earth, so a single wall was built to enclose the present-day Old Town. The city walls have been restored several times in history to resemble their original appearance. With your guide, see Fort Revelin and Minceta Tower within the city walls (entrance fees not included), and learn the strategic position of these forts and their role in Dubrovnik's history. You will also see Fort Lovrijenac in the distance, the only fort that belongs to the city walls but it's physically separated from them, and which you may visit after the tour. As you wander around Dubrovnik's ancient walls, your guide will explain the defensive and political challenges faced by Dubrovnik in the past. Hear stories of the rivalry and conquest Dubrovnik has faced and learn the secrets of how the country used defensive fortifications and diplomacy to remain an independent republic for several years, before ending your tour near the port. *Entrance fee to City Walls not included in price.

Our tour guide Jadranka did a fabulous job. She loves us through the tour very safely and always manages to stop on a quiet place for further discussions. She carried a binder with additional maps and photos to supplement her stories. An excellent tour.
Great historical tour of Dubrovnik walls with flexible and knowledgeable guide

My partner and I greatly enjoyed the tour, which was very well-timed and full of interesting stories. I especially appreciated our tourguide, Davor´s openness for questions and the mixture between objective historical information and personal experience. It made me very happy to have booked the tour and wanting to visit the nearest bookstore and grab some books on Dubrovnik and Croatian history.

Great Tour!

Very informative tour. Our guide Davor was well prepared, shared a lot of history and provided some helpful tips . Did the morning tour; a lot of walking, but well worth the amazing views from the walls. Really enjoyed it.

Amazing and informative guide
, Sep 2021
We really enjoyed this guided walk and our guide Davor was absolutely amazing and really informative. He let us ask questions and his detailed answers were really interesting. I’m glad we had the guided tour as we wouldn’t have learnt half as much by just walking around the walls by ourselves. Davor was really friendly and it was so Interesting to hear his own experience from the the Croat–Bosniak War in the 90’s, this made the tour that bit more authentic knowing he wasn’t just retelling stories from history but his own real life experiences. Would highly recommend. Davor went above and beyond and clearly passionate about his job. Thanks so much.

Excellent history lesson with one omission.
, Sep 2021
The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and it was a good idea that she used a microphone when we had earpieces. There are quite a lot of steps so you need a reasonable level of fitness, and you really need to look out for steps when your main inclination is to look at the amazing sights around you. One omission though - the tour guide covered around 1000 years of Dubrovnik’s history, yet missed out 1940-45, when Croatia supported the nazis. Overall though, I would highly recommend this tour.
Good exercise, great views, interesting history
, Sep 2021
Dubrovnik's city walls are not to be missed while in the city with the great views, and our friendly guide Jadranka helped elevate the experience by bringing us through the history of Dubrovnik, from the construction of Fort Lovrijenac, Dubrovnik's relationships with it's neighbours and also the more recent Homeland War in the 90s.
Worth every step you take!
, Aug 2021
A must do tour but a lot of steps and stairs. Guide was great with knowledge and history of Dubrovnik. If I had known there was going to be so many stairs I probably wouldn’t have gone BUT I’m glad I did go because it really gives you the scenery, history of old town and it was truly amazing. The guide took it easy on us giving us time to get up to next level and waiting for us before continuing. It really is worth it in the end and guide was fabulous. She had a really long and unique name starting with a D. She was great. Thank you.
