Meet a guide at your hotel for a 10:00 am departure, then start the walking tour in the UNESCO-listed Fez medina, a fortified city that was founded in the 9th-century. The first stop of the day is Bab Bouljoud, an elaborate gate overarched with green and blue tile work.
Continue through the medina to the Karaouine Mosque, also called the Mosque of al-Qarawiyyin, the first degree-awarding university in the world. As you walk to the mosque, and throughout the day, you can set a pace the works for you, with plenty of time to stop and explore along the way. The next stop is the Bouanania Madrasa, which dates back to the early 14th-century, and the Nejjarine Museum of Wood Arts and Crafts, built into a restored caravanserai that once housed traveling merchants.
See traditional craftsmen in Seffarrine Square, then visit Dar Batha Museum to see a remarkable collection of traditional arts, including wood carvings, plaster, and embroidery. Take in exhibits of weapons from around the world at the Musee des Armes, and explore the Mellah, the walled quarter that once housed Morocco’s Jewish community.
