Departure Time

1/21/2020 - 12/31/2021
Tuesday - Sunday:09:30 AM - 04:30 PM
Travel independently to Florence’s Accademia Gallery and use your direct-access ticket to bypass the main entrance lines. Then, explore the art treasures in your own way, at your own pace.

Founded in 1784, the Accademia museum was originally part of an art school, showcasing art to inspire the students of the neighboring Accademia di Belle Arti.

Now open to the public, it today houses some of the Renaissance’s greatest masterpieces, including Michelangelo’s sculpture 'David.' Enter the Hall of the Colossus (Sala dell'Anticolosso), and admire the centerpiece; 'The Rape of the Sabines,' a 1582 sculpture by Giambologna, together with works by Filippo Lippi and del Sarto.

Then, roam around the two floors, seeing the rich wood paintings in the Florentine Gothic room, or the musical instruments exhibition. Visit the Gallery of the Prisoners (Galleria dei Prigioni) to view its unfinished sculptures by Michelangelo, including the Prisoners (Prigioni); four incomplete marble statues each depicting a struggling captive.

At the end of the gallery, stop to take in the star attraction: Michelangelo’s 17-foot (5.17-meter) 'David.' Admire the contours of the marble figure’s muscles and veins, completed, almost unbelievably, when Michelangelo was in his twenties.

Leave the Accademia when you wish, bringing your experience to a close.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Galleria dell'Accademia
Founded in 1784 upon Grand Duke Leopoldo of Lorena's decree, La Galleria dell'Accademia was created to host a collection of antique and modern paintings and sculptures so the students of the nearby Accademia di Belle Arti could pursue their studies in the light of these great masterworks. The Accademia Gallery is situated in parts of the former convent San Niccolò in Cafaggio and the hospice of San Matteo. The Accademia Gallery visit begins with the Sala dell'Anticolosso, where the gesso original of The Rape of the Sabines (1582) by Giambologna is placed. Some paintings such as Christ of Pity by Andrea del Sarto and the Deposition of the Cross by Filippo Lippi can be seen here. From here you reach the Galleria dei Prigioni, a corridor that hosts a series of incomplete sculptures by Michelangelo. At the end of the gallery reigns supreme Michelangelo's David.

Florence in a Day | Reduced queuing a must!

There is still a 'line' but it is a 'preferred' queue and took about 10 minutes. Visit to Galleria dell'Accademia was well worth it on a whistle-stop day tour of Firenze.

Avoid Viator

Not impressed having to go to tour operator first to get tickets, before queuing to get in and queuing again inside for security checks and yet a third time to exchange the so-called tickets for proper ones. Viator stinks! Originally my bookings were ALL cancelled and when I tried booking again all the prices had gone up.

Never got the tickets

We had an issue with this booking, as the actual tickets were not sent to us until I called the help office the morning of the gallery visit (who said they had sent the tickets but they really had not.) The tickets were finally sent but it was stressful. Once we had the tickets however, the skip the line was great.

do not use Viator!

If you don't have flexible time DONT use Viator! There are so many details you have to follow up on. If you have all day to be assigned a time I'm sure it's fine, but we had to leave before our assigned time. I did not read the fine print (yes, my fault) Just letting others know you have to be available the entire day just in case.

Great to purchase tickets before, so you wait in a much quicker queue to get in. Tickets were a reasonable price

So wanted to get in to see The Statue David. A definite on my bucket list. First we were booked at wrong museum. Agent knew we wanted to see David, Think he just mistakenly put it in wrong ( Just remember David is at the Academia Gallery .) Also, even with a skip the line ticket you may not get in if you have a time constraint. Also was not informed of the time issue. Know this when booking.Ended up paying for both Gallery/ Museums and didn’t get in to either one. Remember there are also no refunds on these museums. Also not informed. We did get to see the replica of David in Florence in the city square. I have to say all but 2 of our Viator tours through Rome, France and Spain were fabulous so just maybe do a little home work before you book. Some things can easily be over looked if you don’t know the questions to ask, and it’s your agent’s first day on the job. Which mine told me it was and Especially with numerous bookings. Have to say he did me right with everything else, except Barcelona., and I don’t think that was his fault. Must say though, I would definitely book with Viator again.

We chose to utilize skip-the-line for the Accademia Gallery and it was definitely worth it! The line was SO long but we walked right in. We did not do an official tour, but the gallery is very small so I am not sure it is actually needed.

Skip the line was literally 2 minutes! Showed up at the agreed time, they handed you your ticket, walked across to the entrance and we were in! Very crowded but still able to see everything.

"Skip the line" meant "skip the line". After contacting our Viator guide, we walked straight into the gallery, passing a very long line of people.

See David but not with this tour company.

Reservation made last winter. Company promised ticket delivery before the date. One day before I still hadn’t received them, and I called Viator for assistance. They got the tickets for me, but the tour company sent a sarcastic note with the tickets. The company insisted they sent them in late September (October 5 visit). I recommend you buy tickets only from a tour company that provides them when you pay.
