The tour operator Renato was very nice and let us reschedule the tour to a later time when we were late in the morning. Our tour was with Gaetano who made the experience really special. He was by far the best tour guide we have ever had. He was very knowledgeable, passionate about the history of Matera and very entertaining. The whole experience was a pleasure. Would highly recommend this, 10/10!!

This was a great learning experience. A once in a life time opportunity to understand culture and life when time stood still. Unbelievable that a city of people lived in caves like in biblical times and as recent as 70 years ago. Tour guide was amazing and parted detailed knowledge that was informative and educational. Matera is not the ‘Shame of Italy’ but a truly amazing cultural experience.

My husband and I were with another couple and our tour guide Gaetano, who did an excellent job of taking us around Matera and showing us all
the important areas of the town. He was a wealth of knowledge and had a great sense of humor along with a lot of patience. It was a wk degli tour, we leaning a lot, amd definetly would recommend them highway!

Domenico was a very passionate guide and Matera cannot be enjoyed as it rightfully should unless you are accompanied by a guide. Domenico was well versed and we definitely got our money’s worth. Even though we were the only couple on this tour, Viator did not cancel the tour. Kuddos to them.
We would have one recommendation; that Domenico would curtail the information regarding the poop. He often made reference to human feces of the people who use to live in the grottos. Besides this drawback, he was excellent
