What To Expect

Enjoy convenient hotel pickup in Muscat around 8am. Meet your guide and group, then climb into a 4x4 vehicle specially equipped to handle the rugged terrain of Oman.

Set out through the Hajar Mountains, bound for the township of Nizwa, which once functioned as the country's capital. Arrive in Nizwa to visit the bustling souq, or open-air marketplace, and the Nizwa Fort.

Depart Nizwa and head for Jebel Shams, traveling through Wadi Ghul on the way. Keep your camera handy for fantastic views of Jebel Shams, the highest mountain in the Jebel Al Akhdar range, standing at more than 9,800 feet (3,000 meters) tall. Then, travel through the Grand Canyon of Oman to explore remote villages and check out ancient rock carvings.

Continue on to the mountain village of Misfah, where you can follow the ancient stone pathways to the valley below. In a mountainside restaurant, sit down for a traditional meal before making the return trip to Muscat.

The driver/ guide was kind and nice. He brought me for some local Omani food that includes camel meat. When I told him I wanted to visit Muttrah souq, out of good will he drove me there and assisted me in some deal bargaining for my souvenirs. Thank you!

Change in Itinerary

This was a very full all-day tour which gave a good overview of Central Oman. There were two problems however:Firstly, our guide, while a good driver, gave us very little commentary on what we were seeing and left us largely to our own devices.Secondly, there was an important, but unannounced, change to our itinerary. We were supposed to explore Nizwa fort but instead visited Bahla fort. This fort had literally no information, signage or maps as to what we were seeing and our guide knew absolutely nothing about it. Si we wandered about for half an hour or so before giving up. This was a pity as it could have been interesting - Nizwah fort seemed much more developed as a tourist attraction. Our driver had no explanation for this change of itinerary.

Très belle visite puisque le pays est magnifique. En revanche, trouvant la visite un peu courte j'ai repris le programme en principe prévu après la visite (je ne l'avais malheureusement ni emmené avec nous ni étudié avec attention avant de partir) et je me suis rendue compte que la visite du village de montagne et le déjeuner qui devait s'y dérouler avaient été "zappés" par le guide (qui nous a emmené déjeuner dans une sorte de restaurant de routier en bord de route pas agréable du tout ..) avant de nous déposer à l'hôtel ... Soyez vigilants, ne vous faites pas "avoir" comme nous ! Nous n'avons pas bénéficié d'une partie de ce que nous avions payé.
