Departure Time

8:15 AM
After hotel pickup in New Orleans, you're driven to the Oak Alley Plantation, located among the Great River Road sugar plantations alongside the Mississippi River. On arrival, stroll under majestic, 300-year-old oak trees leading up to the antebellum Big House, and take a tour of the opulent mansion with a guide dressed in period costume. The Greek Revival architecture was built in 1837 and later restored in 1925.

Wander the 25-acre (10-hectare) grounds at your own pace during your free time. Visit the blacksmith shop, snap photos of antique farm equipment, or peruse exhibits on slavery and the Civil War. Grab lunch and beverages at the restaurant or cafe (own expense) before the tour moves to the swamp.

Next, board the bus and drive to the site of your swamp tour. On arrival, board a 16-passenger airboat with stadium-style seating for a high-speed adventure through the swamp. You'll have unobstructed views of wildlife, including an up-close look at the star attraction: alligators.

Your captain is experienced at searching out these reptiles, even during hibernation in colder months. The airboat, propelled by a large fan that blows air from the back of the vessel, can produce speeds of up to 35 mph (56 kph). You'll ride in just inches of water into parts of the swamp that are inaccessible to traditional boats or vehicles.

Fun, memorable experience. I will be recommending to all my friends and relatives. I enjoyed the airboat ride and the walk through of the plantation where jay z and Beyoncé filmed Deja Vu music video.

I went in August, which was extremely hot…so walking on the grounds of the plantation was a challenge. I did not like that I could not take pictures inside the plantation house nor did I get a tour of the slave quarters. On the boat…it was really hot when the boat stopped to feed the alligators! But you do get to pet a baby alligator!!!

Great trip! The Oak Alley Trees are magnificent! House tour is quick so it’s mostly the grounds you get to cover by yourself. The swamp tour was awesome! The best one yet! Our tour guide got out of the boat with a big gator!! It was awesome!!!!

Very enjoyable. The bus driver was truly from New Orleans and though he was not supposed to do a tour he pointed out interesting things. The plantation ground are beautiful. We also did the swamp tour. That was awesome! Our airboat guide Remy was just great.

A Fun/Educational Swamp and Oak Alley Plantation Tour
Karen_G
, Aug 2021
Our Swamp Tour Guide was amazing! He was knowledgeable as well as entertaining. I don’t recall his name, but his airboat had the title Wild Thing. The most memorable parts of this part of the trip was watching him get in the water to feed the alligator and take a short ride in its back, and he let us hold a baby alligator. The tour guide at the Oak Alley Plantation was extremely knowledgeable about the plantation, the times, the people, and the history. Finally, our bus driver, Gary, made the ride entertaining. He too was knowledgeable about the region enlightening us about the surrounding area, giving us directional information about our location in regards to the city. He also gave us information on Hurricane Katrina - how, who, and which parts of LA it affected. This was a very educational and fun trip that people of any age could enjoy.

The airboat ride was amazing. The plantation was beautiful but I would’ve liked the option to drive my own vehicle. I saw you could after the fact.
