Great Adventure

I had already visited both of these places back in the 1990’s and it was very nice to go back and rediscover them and learn more facts and refresh my memory of those that I’d forgotten.

I am going to review this in two separate pieces. I'll start with the terrible. First of all, they insist over and over that you arrive before the pickup time, but it turns out the time is just a window and so 14 people were standing at our stop for 35 minutes waiting, since we all got there at least 10 minutes early and pickup was 25 minutes after the time we were told. The driver was a NIGHTMARE. Dwayne told us over and over and over how much he did NOT want to do the plantation tour. He never shut up during the whole ride, but he spent most of the time telling us about his personal life - all his daughters' car accidents, for instance. Who cares?! He did point out where Andrew Jackson was buried - then said "he's some military guy. Google it." I mean, really? He also did NOT enforce the mask policy on the bus, so half the people weren't wearing them, which was very upsetting. The plantations, however, were wonderful. Especially Laura. Our guide, Crystal, was amazing and really made the place come to life. I'd never been to a Creole plantation and we all found it really interesting. Even my 13-year-old niece was really into it. The second plantation, Oak Alley, was also interesting. Our guide there was a little bland, but we happened to run into a guy giving a talk at the (reconstructed) slave houses and he was really fantastic. Overall, I'd say the tour was worth it, but a) try to get a real pickup time from the company and b) make sure you do NOT get Dwayne as your driver.

Thank you for taking time to share your experience with us. We sincerely apologize for the negative experience you had with our driver, Dawayne. We are passing along your review to upper management and they will be addressing this issue with Dawayne personally. We are so glad you enjoyed your tours at the plantations and hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in New Orleans!

Laura tour gave more stories to the history of the plantation. Both for the owners and the slaves. Explained about the harsh lives and how the lives intertwined. Oak alley is beautiful, but no talk about lives of the slaves.

Laura Plantation guide was fantastic. Oak Alley was a bit rushed, wish we had more time there. Overall am so glad we chose this tour. The bus driver, and both guides at both plantations were very informative and told us fun stories of the past.

Laura’s tour was so historical and interesting. Oak Alley was GORGEOUS, but less history was shared.

Both plantations are worth the visit. Guides on site are knowledgeable in the history of the specific plantation. Wish we have more time to explore

Definitely Laura Plantation was the highlight. Logan the tour guide brought the plantation to historical life. Oak Alley was just ok compared to Laura

I enjoyed the day and seeing some of our history

Cajun Encounters transportation was on time and punctual and getting the tours of the two plantations was seamless. Sunshine had excellent energy and gave good recommendations for how to tour the grounds and avoid crowds. Plantations themselves tend to vary in terms of how they present their information, especially in how they bring up the slave side of the story and honor and respect their contributions and struggles. The Laura Plantation did a good job at this, but the Oak Alley Plantation did not. The tour guide at Laura was also outstanding and natural, but the tour guides at Oak Alley were very robotic, scripted, and unnatural. Both plantations were very beautiful and it was a good way to see parts of our dark history as a country that are important to remember and never forget.

The narrator, Michael at the Laura Plantation was superb, very informative of all the past history, people and events that led to many decisions that affected many lives. He explained the culture and made the place alive. Oak Alley was the most impressive regarding the views of the plantations and oaks. The history was interesting, but not as impressive as the narrator at the Laura Plantation.
