Good, but consider doing the half-transit!
Sharon_K

Skip to next paragraph for my thoughts. Definitely read all these reviews, which I’ll echo here. I found my experience lined up with most of them—there was some confusion about check in / departure time, lunch was early (but actually just as I was getting hungry, since the day starts so early), masking on the boat got more and more relaxed as the day went on, there was a LOT of waiting, we were glad we brought snacks, and the guide’s narration was excellent. The food was pretty good, comparable to airplane food. Beer and wine were available for purchase. There were sufficient bathrooms for the number of people (but note that I did this trip in May, not during peak season). The trip itself: was really really cool. The container ships, docks, locks, tugs, and locomotives were really interesting to see up close and learn about. It was absolutely unique to be on a boat IN the locks instead of just visiting the Miraflores visitor center. On the other hand, unless you feel really, really strongly about collecting the experience of going the whole way through (like I did), ****definitely only do the half transit**** !!! We got stuck in the Gatun locks so long it absolutely broke our spirits and we ended the day miserable. I cried. It ate up an entire day of our fairly short visit. The half transit would have left an entire afternoon for more exploring Casco or whatever and would have been a lot more enjoyable. BUT now I can say I’ve been on two oceans in one day and went the whole way through, so. Only you can decide what that’s worth to you. Don’t forget to take some time-lapse videos! They turn out really cool!

All worked out ok from pickup to drop off at Panama City hotel. Very long day for full transit. So if you only want a half day taste of it do that instead with a partial. Perfect weather so lucked out. Only negative was one choice of lunch some pesto pasta thing. Not for me.

Great boat ride, bus transfer not well organized.
ptmcgra
, Apr 2022
The boat tour is great but the bus transfer was unnecessarily long. The bus takes you all the way to the end of the Amador where another mini-bus picks you up then takes you all the way to the hotel. This is ridiculous and adds about 1.5 hours to the tour. The bus literally went by our hotels to go to the end of Amador. It's really puzzling why they can't let us off downtown. All this is during Saturday night rush hour. I spent 13 hours on this tour and there wasn't enough food. We were starving by the time we got back to the hotel. For as much money as this tour costs you'd think they would've been a little more organized.

Going through the locks was the best part. The first half of the trip was too crowded for comfort. Beautiful cruise. We were late getting back.

Panama Canal, full transit.

Wonderful experience. A long day, be aware that if you do the full transit it will take almost 12 hours. But everything is very well organized! The tour met my expectations.

Bad Experience
Randall_A
, Mar 2022
Awful experience because there was no experience. We missed our pickup time because there was an initial departure time of 6:30 am, which we arrived at the agreed upon time and place at 6:15. The website is clear that you should check your email the day before for any changes. We did throughout the day. Eventually the email did come late in the day advising that the pickup time was changed to 5:00 am, a full hour and a half earlier than the website originally stated, and admittedly we did not see it until the next morning. So, while the company did meet their obligation to notify us on the revised departure time, we did not confirm the acceptance of the email. You would think after spending $380 on two tickets there would be some effort to contact the client regarding this change. That would be the courteous thing. It should be obvious that the client missed the email. But this customer service courtesy was not extended by Panama Marine. And calls and e-mails were unreturned that morning. So they are happy to take your money, but also seem happy when a client misses this all important email. Panama is an amazing place with great people. Unfortunately, the experience with Panama Marine was the one low point.

A truly worthwhile tour

Memorable in a very negative way is the tour operator employee's having instigated a confrontation. She should be fired as unfit to be in her position. The rest of the staff and crew were great. The commentator with the microphone was especially informative, keeping passengers abreast as to the improvements being made to the Canal, historical information, and the details of our passage as the tour progressed. A big negative for us was the fact there would be a previously unpublished and surprise stop (delay for the rest of us) to let off over 150 passengers who had signed up for the half tour. This is a long day and that lengthy stop made it more so. Notwithstanding the negatives this is a very good tour. This is my second 12 hour tour since Feb 2019 and I learned a lot of new details about the Canal since my first trip.

Coast to Coast Panama Canal transit
Vernon_S
, Feb 2022
Fantastic and informative whole day trip! The guide (Edwin) did an outstanding job describing the engineering and history of the canal. He answered some very tough questions and kept it light yet informative throughout the whole trip. There were no glitches or problems with the transportation, boarding, entire trip, and the offload and transportation back was smooth and well-practiced. All in all, this was an amazing day, full of interesting sights and activities! Highly recommend this trip for anyone interested in a "Bucket-list" activity! Coast to Coast transit of the Panama Canal! Don't miss out!

Panama Canal- long day trip but totally worth it

Awesome experience! The tour guide was so informative and very positive attitude during his whole talk and tour of the Panama Canal. He genuinely looked like he loves what he does. All the staff have been very helpful and the boat ride was never uncomfortable except for the sun… i recommend sunscreen and hats and if you wear long sleeves it’s better so you don’t get super burned… some wind also so try to get a hat that doesn’t fall off east. Bring some games and a book if you do the full transit tour.

Crowded, Boring, Amazing
Sabrina_C
, Feb 2022
Initially, there were too many people on-board, crowded, uncomfortable. At 11:45 the half/day people disembark, and then there is room. At times, like while watching the locks in motion, it was Amazing At times, like between noon and 2:30 is was VERY boring. Nothing to see. Breakfast was tea/coffee, a small muffin, a small container of fruit, and a cheese sandwich on white bread with the crust removed. Lunch, which was served much too early was ziti with pesto, small salad, cookie and soda or water. Water and soda were free all day. 3:00 pm we had snack of small ham sandwich, granola bar and banana. This trip was very slow moving, at times waiting up to an hour for ship in front of us to pass through the locks before us. The staff was great. The announcer spoke clearly and explained everything that was happening, in Spanish, English, and German. I believe there were about 8 bathrooms on board. The gift shop has not reopened since Covid. I needed reading material during the boring times, but not available. There was a nice map downstairs on a wall, and I wish we had all received one as part of the tour. Once in Colon, we disembarked to board busses back to original port. We were told about one hour drive, but ended up being one hour and 40 minutes. I would never take this tour again, but I am glad I took it once.

Doing the full transit of the Panama Canal is certainly the trip of a lifetime and this trip lived up to the billing. In fact, taking a small boat through the Canal was probably a better experience than taking a cruise boat. My big reservation. of this trip was their pandemic precautions were more lip service than reality. There were far too many people on the boat to do any social distancing. In a country where mask wearing is almost universal both indoors and outdoors, mask wearing seemed optional for almost 1/2 our fellow travelers and the crew really needs to do more enforcement than an occasional verbal encouragement. I would note for anyone considering a partial canal transit that the best part of the cruise was the second half after most of the partial transit folks departed. The entire trip was reasonably well run and the information provided quite extensive.

Great opportunity to know the canal. Plenty of drink onboard. Very relaxing. Able to watch the canal from very close distance and experience how the canal works. However, the cruise starting time is varies daily. We left at 5am this time. No sleep the night prior.

A MUST/FLAWLESS

For most people, I would recommend this as a bucket-list must. Howsomever, the actual experience at times can be close to watching paint dry - Lots of time to reflect on this awesome human accomplishment We were up before first-light and got back to our hotel after 8pm. The pick-up, return trip and everything [including the food service] in between was handled beautifully. You will be close as humanly possible to the action of the transit. Go!

Full Transit Tour of Panama Canal

This was a fascinating and informative tour. The tour guide (Gus) provided an exceptional accounting of the Panama Canal history and was able to answer endless questions posed by passengers on the tour. This tour is well worth the time and dollars spent!
