A+ Night Tour, Highly Recommend!

This tour was fantastic. Our guide Fabio was friendly and really knew his stuff. We saw at least 4 different types of frogs, a couple types of toads, a number of different spider species, and several snakes. My girlfriend and I both loved every minute. They picked us up and dropped us up right at our Airbnb, with smooth comfortable transportation in an air conditioned van. The dinner was also delicious. We've already recommended this to several friends! Thanks to Jade tours for everything :)
Super cool experience!

Disappointing Evening Due to Poor Guide Experience
Bruce_J
, Dec 2021
I’ve taken about ten different guided nature tours in Costa Rica and this was the most disappointing. It’s a shame, because the good reviews on here had me hoping for an interesting and engaging walk through the night jungle.
The guide for our evening started things off by telling me to stay at the end of the line in our group of six. I thought maybe he was joking, but without a smile or laugh I took him at his word. I was the oldest and largest in the group (58, 6’1”, 225) and I’m guessing he didn’t want me spooking things or blocking views or whatever. Which was a shame, because the trails at Rainmaker (a GORGEOUS place) are narrow and everyone has to move through single file. Being at the end of a line of six people for the evening you miss out on most everything. You can’t hear any explanations or know what’s being pointed out as you walk, you just see flashlights waving around up ahead. By the time you get to the point where the guide pointed something out you’re left searching for a well camouflaged critter or plant or rock or God knows what by yourself while the rest of the group moves on without you.
Our guide did set up a scope on a tripod a few times to highlight specific snakes and lizards but because he was reading stuff on his phone while waiting for people to look through the scope he didn’t notice that several times the guy at the end of the line didn’t get a chance to look at things and folded up the scope before I had a chance to see. Basically I felt left out of the much of the tour.
I know I should have spoken up during the tour and explicitly asked to see what everyone else was getting to see and be told what everyone else heard, but when you’re with a bunch of strangers that can feel awkward. A better guide would have made sure that everyone got to enjoy the full experience. Perhaps they would even hope to teach everyone something.
I have to question our guide’s knowledge or willingness to share it as well. A member of our group at one point asked what kind of snake we were being shown and was simply told “it’s a snake.” The same thing happened later with a toad; not exactly helpful. It seemed he really didn’t know what we were looking at some of the time.
I also have to note that the food at the end was super simple rice and beans - delicious but simple. If there was chicken in there, it was hard to find. The ladies serving the food were gracious and friendly and I appreciate their work. But the description in the tour listing might lead you to expect more for dinner.
As I said, Rainmaker is a fantastic place and there’s a rich variety of insects, animals, and plants to explore at night. But I wouldn’t do it with this company’s tour.

Dear client,
Dinner in our tour is a plus. This is a costarican typical meal. By the way is super delicious and people love very much this authentic part of our experience. Although, I suppose that you were expecting a super expensive dinner. In this case I would have recommended you to visit a picky restaurant and invest you $55 in one single dinner, which at the end you would even have to pay more than that.
I have personally spoken to the guides regarding the rest of your experience description. I will make sure the guides manage their tours the best as possible.
Kind regards!

It was our first time in Costa Rica and we had such a blast on the night tour!! Our guide Edgar was amazing!! He was so nice and informative, he made our tour super fun. He was able to capture the coolest pictures of all the animals we saw on the tour. He definitely made our night, love you Edgar!!! At the end we had a traditional chicken and rice dinner which was delicious. Overall great experience, would definitely recommend for anyone wanting to experience the night life in the jungle! The guide was a nice guy and had great knowledge of the frogs, lizards, and spiders he spotted. He took pictures using phones from people in the group so we all have good pictures. We saw two glass frogs, which he said are difficult to find. A woman in our group really wanted to see Costa Rica's famous red-eyed tree frog, so the guide was making "frog call" noises to find it, and he did! It was really amazing to see this beautiful frog at night. We did not walk over the hanging bridges on this tour. There is a big pond on site with so many bullfrogs, which was entertaining.
It rained the entire tour. I brought a big umbrella and was able to use that along the walk, which prevented me from getting soaked. My kids and I wore running shoes, and parts of the walk (near the pond) were a little "soggy" so our shoes got wet, but not a big deal, in my opinion. One person in our group wore Teva sandals and I think she regretted it. I recommend close-toed shoes. I also recommend pants because there were bugs, and they were attracted to the flashlights everyone carried. I don't know if the bugs were the biting type, but I was glad I was wearing pants and a long-sleeved shirt. My kids weren't wearing pants, but wore tall soccer socks and pulled them up past their knees (with long shorts), and that worked well.
We did not wear masks, which was very appreciated. We could actually hear and understand the guide. The entire tour was outside, aside from the bus ride up. We did not take the bus, but I think people wore masks on the bus.
They have a covered area where everyone starts and finishes the tour, and this is where we ate dinner (beans, rice, fried plantain, little salad, water, pineapple cinnamon juice, starfruit juice). As a parent, it was convenient that they fed my kids after the tour because it was a late night for them, and we didn't have to worry about food when we returned to our rental house.
This is a neat experience I recommend for seeing frogs, lizards, and spiders. We didn't see any snakes, but were told other groups have -- it is just a matter of luck I suppose.
Fun tour

Edgar our guide was awesome! We were all nervous to trek through the jungle at night but our fears subsided and we had a great time. You will see many frogs, lizards and bugs of all sorts. Wear hiking shoes there are ants on the trail. Dinner afterwards was great as well. If you are looking for something fun to do at night do this.
