First thing in the morning, head to Bar Polese, Piazza della Città Leoni, near St. Peter’s Square to meet your guide.

At this early time, you’ll stroll around St. Peter’s Square without the crowds that appear later in the day. See the Swiss Guard in their colorful attire as you make your way to the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. With your small group and guide, you’ll take the elevator to the dome’s first terrace to admire its intricate mosaics and other close-up details.

The summit of the dome sits atop of 231 steps; there’s no quick way up, but the view from the top rewards your efforts. Have your camera ready to capture a stunning panorama of Rome, stretched out from St. Peter’s Square to the Tiber River and beyond.

Make your way back down the steps, then take a tour of the basilica itself. See Bernini’s famous bronze baldachin and La Pietà, an early Michelangelo masterpiece. Rub the foot of a sacred statue for luck, and hear the history that’s steeped into the walls of the grand basilica.

Before you leave, you’ll visit the papal crypt. Discover the most significant tombs, and listen to stories about the men whose bodies were laid to rest in the crypt. Your tour finishes here.

Poorly executed

Tour was on time to the meeting location but took a lot of time to sort out groups and meet with the tour guides. Jaber (our guide) has been a tour guide for almost 40 years. Its a shame that most of his knowledge was lost because the only time an audioguide was used was almost 2 hours into the tour. Had a known we would spend 30+ minutes in line at St. Peter's Square in a massive crowd feigning to hear our tour guide talk about the history and architecture, I would not have booked this tour. There was also an event the day of our visit which limited the viewing of the basilica. While I know that this isn't the company's fault, they should have adjusted the timeline and visited the inside prior to the dome climb. Due to the event, we barely saw La Pieta and did not see the crypts at all. We decided to leave the tour early due to the limited access inside the basilica.

Hello gandkharris, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are very sorry to hear experience with Walks was a disappointing one, and that you found it took a long time for your group to get organised before entering St.Peter's basilica. Despite our best efforts to adhere to a strict schedule, sometimes, even with skip the line tickets, it can take considerable time to enter the Vatican due to the sizable crowds during peak tourist season. We, unfortunately, cannot skip the security lines. Nevertheless, we realize how frustrating this must have been. Customer satisfaction is our number one priority, and that is why we invite you to get in touch with us at so we can try to arrange something for you to make up for your loss of time. All the best, The Walks Team

St Peters Basilica Tour with Dome Climb and Crypt with Laura
, May 2019
We really enjoyed this tour. Laura was a great guide, very knowledgeable and funny. The meet-up and sorting people into groups went well. We started early, 8am so the queue for security was not too bad but Laura took our minds off the queue by talking to us about the architecture and history and keeping us interested. We then went up the lift to the gallery before starting the climb of 322 steps to the top of the dome. It was hard going but the view was worth it. Laura then took us into the church with microphones so we could hear everything that was said, the crowds weren't too bad, the sights are amazing and Laura kept her interesting commentary going throughout the tour. Laura then took us into the Crypt before the tour was complete. We would recommend this tour as an alternative to the museums if you want to avoid the crowds.

Not enjoyable. Guide was knowledgeable but the crowds were oppressive. I found the men working in St Peters to be arrogant and rude. We paid a lot for not much.
