Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Board your climate-controlled minibus and relax on the journey inland to Pompeii. Once you arrive at the UNESCO World Heritage–listed archaeological digs, meet your guide and head off on a tour to discover Pompeii’s highlights.

As you explore, learn about the destructive volcanic eruption of AD 79 that buried the ancient city for centuries. The ash and molten lava that streamed out of Mt. Vesuvius preserved the town remarkably, and many original landmarks can be found around the site. See the old public baths, the Macellum (market), and the Temple of Jupiter, and hear about their history from your guide.

After a break for lunch at your own expense, continue with a drive up the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius. Stretch your legs on a short hike up to the crater’s lip and learn about the infamous volcano from a mountain guide. Make use of some free time to gaze out over the Bay of Naples, then return to your transport for the drive back to Sorrento.

Don't miss this tour! Our guide was very knowledgeable and explained so much to us! This isn't a tour to go on your own. You will miss the history! And Mount Vesuvius and the views are breathe taking. I am 65 and my husband is 73. We are both in fairly good shape but be forewarned, the hike up to the Crater can be a challenge for some.

Our tour guide was Carmella. She was great, very knowledgeable and friendly. Pompeii was a magnificent site to see and Mt Vesuvius was an adventure, would recommend wearing shoes that you would want to get rid of or hiking boots. Bring water, but don’t drink too much because there was no bathroom available when we went. Overall, we had a great experience!!

A piece of preserved history, that has been recovered for our viewing

It is so powerful to see what nature can do, that people can't control everything. The site is large and you get a very clear idea of what it was like and how landscapes do change over time.

Great day in Pompeii and on the Vesuvius - be aware of heat and steep climb on Vesuvius

The trip was well organised, you get a message with the necessary directions to the meeting spot a day in advance. The tour in Pompeii was short but sweet and covered several of the most known landmarks. This trip managed to give us a very good view of the way of life in Pompeii before the eruption thanks to our guide. Our guide Ornella was very knowledgeable and was able to amend the tour to include a recently opened landmark on the spot after hearing there was a repeat visitor. She had considerable expertise due to her involvement in new archeaological research on the site and was also very kind, mentioning that we were all welcome as her guest if we ever passed through her hometown while we were driving through there on the way to Pompeii. In respect of the proposed lunch which was 15 EUR each, it should be noted that this is a very basic lunch which has a pretty normal price as opposed to Pompeii stands. You can choose one of three pastas and/or a pizza, you will get a very basic salad with little dressing and a small pastry for desert. The main advantage is that you do not have to go looking for food around the stands and that you eat something decent before climbing mount Vesuvius (which was necessary as pointed out by our guide). Negative point here is that you are quickly seated at on a limited amount of tables with the fellow travelers, do not have many alternative options as to stay within the menu and are expected to stay seated for most of the hour of lunch (in which you could otherwise do some very limited exploring). Just something to bear in mind when making the choice for the set menu or not. If you want extensive free time to explore Pompeii I would recommend to book an alternative longer tour or to go by yourself. This 2-2.5 hour tour is not designed to do that. The view from Mount Vesuvius was amazing. The climb from about 1000m to about 1280m on the mount Vesuvius which all travellers must do to get to the top is quite a hike, which makes it feel all the more rewarding when reaching the top. One thing to note however is that the allocated time to get up to the top, have a quick tour from the local guide and get back down (about 35 mins each) is pretty short. It is definitely doable as a young person being out of shape, but if you are of older age and out of shape and/or overweight for example, you may want to consider only going for the Pompeii part of the tour or not booking this during the summer when it is very hot. I saw young people sighing and slowing down from exhaustion on my way up and down at about 32-34 degrees in August. Our driver Antonio made sure that we got around safely (which is not easy on and off mount Vesuvius!). Overall it was a great experience comprising a very short - but interesting and comprehensive - taste of Pompeii with a chance to experience the view from the top of mount Vesuvius while pondering about the power with which it must have erupted to bombard Pompeii with huge rocks.

A good tour

A very good tour although the heat didn't help the experience. Ornella did a good job on the bus and Vesuvius, while Guilia was a first class guide around Pompeii. Extremely knowledgeable with a wealth of interesting facts delivered in a very pleasant and interesting way. The walk up Vesuvius was hard in the heat and took us 62 year olds 30 mins at a fair pace - best not to do it in sandals because of the small stones on the path.

Sasá was such a great guide! He knew everything kept everything running smoothly!! We will never forget our trip and everything we learned. You could easily walk around Pompeii and not learnt he history but sasá knows everything (and you know you are in good hands when everyone from Pompeii knows him and are telling you, you are in the best hands)! Thanks Sasá from your Irish friends!

The bus was big, comfy, with good conditioning. We liked the program and the content of the tour. But the main thing is always the guide. Sasa did a great job - created a really relaxed and fun atmosphere in the group, introduced the content in a very clear manner, was supportive and structured. A real Pro! We learned many new things without any efforts and also had a lot of fun. Thank you!

The tour through Pompeii took almost three hours. Guides Francesca and Ornella were awesome. There was so much to see and so many stories to tell! I learned a lot that day. Going up to the top of mount Vesuvius was tough after that long walk in scorching heat. It definitely takes MORE than 20 minutes for a healthy young adult to walk all the way up. I wish someone had given us more information about that. It took too much time, so we had to return sooner than expected although we would have liked to stay longer on that site.
